Burnley 1, Grimsby Town 1

BURNLEY had to settle for just a point against the bottom club as their second half onslaught failed to produce a winner.

The Clarets totally dominated the second 45 minutes after Andy Cooke had cancelled out Danny Butter field's early strike to send the sides in level at the break.

But even with top-scorer Andy Payton back in their side they couldn't find a way past Town keeper Danny Coyne.

Grimsby had taken the lead after 11 minutes when Butterfield registered his first ever League goal with a thumping 25-yard volley.

Cooke equalised seven minutes later with his first Second Division strike of the season when he headed in a Paul Cook corner at the near post.

Grimsby were occasionally dangerous on the break after that with Stuart Campbell bringing a sharp save out of Paul Crichton just before the break.

But it was Burnley who took control following their shaky start only to find the goal-touch desert them.

Impressive midfielder Kevin Ball had half-a-dozen efforts and John Mullin also tested Coyne.

But it was Payton who went closest to the winner on his first start of the season.

Coyne denied him two minutes into the second half and then again 25 minutes from the end from a shot that had goal written all over it.

The Clarets felt they should have had a penalty when Cooke was dragged to the ground but nothing was given, a decision which summed up Burnley's frustrating afternoon.
