DAVID Brown battled back from a finger injury to record a vital half century in Burnley's Worsley Cup quarter-final win over Accrington at Thorneyholme Road last night.

The match was held over from Saturday because of the weather and number four batsman Brown looked in danger of missing the clash after he suffered a suspected broken finger in the Transco Lancashire League defeat at Colne on Sunday.

It later turned out to be bruising and the 18-year-old battled against the pain to record a century stand with Burnley pro Dale Benkenstein to seal a semi-final tie at home to Bacup.

Burnley resumed on 60-2 chasing Accrington's 149 all out with Benkeinstein and Brown at the crease.

And the two turned in a match-winning innings as the South African pro made a top score of 59 -- which included six fours -- before he became Mohsin Ahmed's first victim.

Brown ended with an unbeaten 52 -- hitting two fours and two sixes including the winning boundary -- to put Burnley on course for their first major trophy since 1984.

They are also through to the quarter-finals of the Inter League Challenge Cup.

Mohsin Ahmed had taken the wicket of skipper Andy McLeod for one to give Accrington a slight hope but it was always going to be Burnley's day as they celebrated a six wicket victory.

A superb century from Australian professional Shaun Young secured Bacup's passage into the last four at the expense of East Lancs.

Chasing the home side's total of 194-6, Bacup resumed on 78-3 last night requiring another 115 for victory off 29 overs.

And experienced Aussie Young laid the foundations for a five wicket victory with an imperious knock.

The classy left-hander shared a brilliant fourth wicket century stand with John Cunliffe (25) as the current league champions cruised towards their target.

And when he was eventually run out by Richard Cooper, he had scored 104 off 139 balls, striking 11 fours and one six.

Briefly, East Lancs scented a chance of victory with the visitors still requiring 37 off seven overs in the fading light once Young had departed.

But Peter Killelea (19 not out) and Jon Chapman (25 not out) steered Bacup home with 13 balls and five wickets to spare to seal a memorable victory.

Skipper Phil Mercer was the pick of the East Lancs bowlers taking 3-34.

He had also starred with the bat in his side's innings on Saturday, scoring a quick-fire 53 off just 51 balls to compliment a patient half century from opener Andy Clague. SCORE BOARDS
