this week, with THE REV CHRIS STERRY, Vicar of Whalley Parish Church, Guinness Book of Records contender this weekend for the longest-ever sermon

MEMORY: Being wheeled in my pram past a cornfield, red with poppies, in my home village near Wakefield.

RECORD: I would like to say it was She Loves You (yeah, yeah, yeah) by The Beatles. In fact, I think that was the second. The first, an impulsive childhood purchase, was Nellie the Elephant.

HOME: A flat above the Anglican church in a small town called Logan in Utah, where I was working as a student in 1977.

JOB: Curate at St John's Church, Huddersfield.

SERMON: St Peter's Church, Stanley, Wakefield, in August 1975. I was at theological college then. My brother and the vicar's son were best friends at school, so when the vicar and his lay reader fell out he drafted me in to cover for his holidays.

CAR: A 1984, Citroen 2CV called Benjie. I couldn't get rid of him when we got a "proper" car, so he was put out to grass on retirement and now rusts peacefully in our carport.

EMBARRASSMENT: Pass (can't remember any!)

PET: A border collie/terrier cross called Tip.

FRIEND: I've had lots of friends. I don't remember the first but my wife Joanie is the most important.

HOLIDAY: Scarborough, with my parents. My brother was crawling so I must have been four. My only memory is that he crawled straight down to the sea and shovelled half of Scarborough beach into his mouth!
