BURNLEY councillors are being asked to give their backing to an East Lancashire "Quality of Life" survey.

Members of Burnley Borough Council have been recommended to take part in the survey which is to probe people's perceptions of East Lancashire as a place to live.

People will be asked their views about how they see the area as a whole as well as asking questions about their sense of belonging to a neighbourhood, town or East Lancashire as a whole.

They will also be quizzed on various aspects of the quality of life in East Lancashire, including such matters as health, environment, shopping, recreation, housing and jobs.

The survey is being sponsored by the East Lancashire Partnership, whose strategy includes the development of citizens panels across the area to be used for East Lancashire wide consultation projects.

There are already citizen panels in four of the six local authority areas including Burnley.

Members of Burnley's Ratification Committee will tomorrow be asked to agree to take part in the proposed exercise.

Council officer Jerry Smith will tell the committee that as well as providing useful comparative information between Burnley and the other boroughs on how residents perceive their quality of life.

In a report to the committee he adds: "The survey would also provide information on the use of and satisfaction with key cultural amenities and services in Burnley by people living outside the borough whom we could not survey through our own panel.

"These are likely to include the Mechanics and Towneley Hall and possibly Gawthorpe Hall."
