MR S Fradd (Letters, September 12) complains about the lack of regeneration in the "town about three miles south of Blackburn".

Obviously, he has not seen the recent magnificent restoration of India Mill which has received a £1.4million heritage grant and the creation there of 500 jobs (when was the last time 500 jobs were created in Darwen?)

In addition, Darwen town centre has seen a superb £1.5million new school at Holy Trinity, an award-winning £115,000 redevelopment of Darwen Library Theatre, the Sainsbury development at Hardman Way and improvements to the Leisure Centre, Town Hall and Library.

A new health facility, costing about £750,000 will soon commence in the town, while the SureStart building (£1.2million) has recently opened on Lord Street.

Of course, more needs to be achieved, but it never ceases to amaze me how some people in my home town always complain about investment in the town three miles north of Darwen, but never see the investments in their own back yard!

COUN DAVE SMITH (Sunnyhurst Ward), Avondale Road, Darwen.
