CYCLING on the canal towpath a fishy idea? Not on your life, Councillor Fred Slater (LET, April 15).
Having ridden the entire length of the Leeds-Liverpool canal in stages over 10 days, my wife and I considered it a wonderful experience. Most of the towpath's entire length (127 miles) has been renovated to make it suitable for cycling.
British Waterways have numerous notices displayed stating cyclists must give way to walkers and slow down when fishermen are seen.
I can honestly say my wife and I did not get any bad reactions from either walkers or fishermen on the entire journey.
This was, of course, because we obeyed the rules. We stopped for walkers, stopped and chatted to fishermen, who, believe it or not, were interested in our adventure -- maybe because we are both pensioners!
This towpath is used by cyclists to get to work, etc. in all the towns it passes through -- Leeds, Bingley, Skipton, Burnley, Chorley, Wigan etc.
Come on, Coun Slater, are we in Blackburn with Darwen going to be the odd ones out -- and, as usual, out of step with the public?
