ATHERTON Team Five starred last Thursday in a final presentation showcasing their achievements as Groundwork's Prince's Trust Volunteers during their 12-weeks Personal Development Programme challenge.

The 16-25 year-olds were given the opportunity at The Atherton Arms to show family and friends what they had achieved along the way and to thank those who have helped.

Proud Maggie McIntyre, Atherton Team Five team leader said: "The team has worked extremely hard over the past 12-weeks and proved to be motivated and resourceful.

"All have the ability to succeed in life and I hope The Prince's Trust Volunteers has given them a realisation that they can achieve whatever they desire, if they show the same attitude and commitment."

During the course of the Programme the team have revamped Stonehouse Resource Centre's rear gardens, constructed and painted props for the production of 'Wizard of Oz' at Dorset Road Community Centre.

Generous local companies backed their work by donating over 100 plants for the Stonehouse gardens plus paint and supplies for the stage construction.

Volunteer, Victoria Guy stated: "It has opened my eyes to new experiences and challenges and really helped to build many of the other team members' confidence and made them more comfortable with day to day challenges.

"I think the entire team has bonded famously and I have made some very good friends. The memory will stay with me and I would recommend the programme to anyone."

The Prince's Trust Volunteers Programme in Atherton is supported by funding from the government through Single Regeneration Budget Round 5 Atherton Building Communities. This enables young people to contribute positively to their local community.

Atherton Team Five hosted a very successful 'family fun day' at Atherton's Early Years & Family Services Centre, running activities and games for children, culminating in a raffle on which numerous prizes handed out included signed footballs and Easter Eggs, all of which were donated by local businesses.

The team is grateful to everyone who donated gifts and raffle prizes and to Sainsburys (Leigh), Asda (Astley Bridge) and Morrisons (Ince), for allowing the team to bag pack to raise funds for the food for the children's party.

The next volunteers' programme starts in Atherton on June 9. More information from Maggie McIntyre on 01942 871684.
