J PILKINGTON (Letters, May 25) wishes to know why the BNP's recent council seat gains have caused fuss and condemnation.

It seems hard to believe that he is unaware that the BNP are a far right, hatred-provoking, racist, political party which preys on people's fears to promote its agenda.

Mr Pilkington asks why no fuss was made when Asian councillors were elected. When an Asian councillor is elected as a candidate for an extremist party I am sure there will be plenty of "fuss and condemnation."

The more the BNP are held up as guardians of everything British, the more polarised our communities will become with extremism increasing on all sides.
