BLACKBURN with Darwen's ruling Labour councillors have yet again allocated themselves an inflation-busting rise in allowances -- of 3.5 per cent (LET, May 20).

From your article, it would appear that Liberal-Democrat councillors have a conscience and suggested they would give it to charity.

Not so the Labour group. They digress by referring to the plight of workers in the public sector.

What arrogance!

Last year, the Labour group voted through a rise of 10 per cent shortly after the local elections, even though it was ratified before.

That amounts to almost 14 per cent in two years.

How many workers, public sector or otherwise, have received a wage rise of seven per cent for each of the last two years?

For pensioners, it has been 1.7 per cent this year, which doesn't even cover the cost of the rise in council tax.

Well done, borough councillors, for your insensitivity. And you wonder why extremist political groups are gaining votes.

There was a time when local citizens were proud to serve the community free of charge and were held in high regard by the electorate.

Where has that little-used word 'integrity' gone?
