RESIDENTS in East Lancashire are being urged to add improving home security to their list of New Year's resolutions.

Crime-busting police in the Pennine Division want to prevent the distress that occurs when post-Christmas burglaries are committed.

Officers are warning that thieves are on the prowl at this time of year now that homes are full of new and expensive gifts.

They are urging residents in Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale to put improving home security at the top of their list.

And police are asking people to look at incorporating better security measures into the home such as mortice locks, spy holes, door chains and window locks.

Crime prevention officer Andrea Gregson said: "Home security should be something that people consider all year round but unfortunately many people don't realise how important it is to have good locks fitted or security lights and alarms.

"In fact, some people still leave their doors and windows open which, sad though it may seem, provides an open invitation to thieves."

She added: "We've made massive reductions in crime over the past 12 months, achieving a 42 per cent reduction in the number of burglaries across Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale and we're keen to keep up the good work."
