CALLS have been made for signs warning motorists of frogs crossing the road after 64 amphibians were found dead in a country lane.
The squashed frogs were discovered in Mill Hill Lane, Hapton, by a dog walker this morning.
According to Lancashire Wildlife Trust it is common for frogs to cross roads at this time of year on journeys to ponds where they breed.
Joan Lakeland, chairman of Hapton Parish Council, said the amphibians crossed the lane in their droves every spring.
Peter Hornby, of Burnley Wildlife Conservation Forum, said warning signs could prove useful in a campaign to prevent their deaths.
According to Mr Hornby, toads are more likely to be run over because they move a lot slower than frogs.
He added: “Some local authorities have put signs up and although it isn’t common, a precedence has been set.
“It would be useful for a local person to contact Lancashire County Council’s highways to point out where signs are needed.”
Mr Hornby said he was aware of cases where trenches had been dug at roadsides to prevent amphibians getting to highways.
But he said such obstacles were often impractical because frogs and toads find ways around them.
James Ellaby, spokesman for Lancashire Wildlife Trust urged motorists to take extra care.
He said: “This time of year is when frogs are most active because it’s their mating season and they will be heading to ponds to breed.
“Unfortunately, this means that they run more of a risk of coming into contact with busy roads, so we’d call on drivers to take extra care on country roads, particularly in areas near to lakes and ponds.”

Wouldn't it be better to provide them with another pond on over side of the road so they need not cross this would help reduce losses in time will help there numers to go up.
(Conservation in action.)
This would be much easier then trying to educate the Frogs into reading signs.
