Blackburn family members sentenced for violent bid to bring back sister

A TEENAGE woman, who had broken away from her family, was bundled into a car from a busy street and kept at a house for 90 minutes by relatives, a court heard.

Tanzeela Hanif, then 19, was lured to a city centre before being taken back to Blackburn, where she was made to take a pregnancy test.

Bradford Crown Court was told that the family, led by eldest brother Sajid Hanif, had acted out of concern for the well-being of their sister, but had gone too far.

She had been punched during her ordeal by Sajid and threatened with a hammer by another brother.

Five members of her family were sentenced, along with a close friend.

Judge Peter Benson said relatives had genuine concerns for Tanzeela and reported her missing.

But he told brothers Sajid and Wajid Hanif: "It was clear to you she had taken a conscious decision to stay clear of the family influence. Whether that was wise on her part was immaterial because at the age of 19 she has a right to choose her way of life."

Sajid Hanif, 35, and his 29-year-old wife Sheena, both of Darwen, and Wajid Hanif, 33, and Lee Gilligan, 23, of Blackburn, pleaded guilty to affray at a previous hearing. Lubna Hanif, 29, a solicitor, and Asim Hanif, 24, also of Blackburn, admitted threatening behaviour.

Prosecutor Jonathan Sharp said Tanzeela, the youngest child, had been living at a women's refuge in Bradford at the time of the incident in July last year.

He said the family devised a plan to bring her back home, which involved someone ringing her and impersonating a police officer and persuading her to meet in Bank Street, Bradford.

Mr Sharp said Sheena told the 19-year-old: "This is what I have to do, Tanzeela. You have to go home."

Sajid was behind her waving his fist. Gilligan, Lubna and Asim were also present, and the teenager was bundled into one of the cars and driven to Blackburn where she was taken to an empty house owned by Lubna.

Mr Sharp said Tanzeela was subjected to further violence, primarily by Sajid.

Gilligan and Asim bought a pregnancy test kit and the victim was required to use it in the presence of Sheena. Wajid joined in the abuse of his sister, picking up a hammer and threatening to kill her.

Jailing Sajid for 21 months, Judge Benson said he had treated his sister with deliberate cruelty and used gratuitous violence. He said Wajid's conduct was disgraceful and cowardly and jailed him for 12 months.

Gilligan was given a six-month sentence suspended for two years, with 12 months supervision and 100 hours unpaid work; Sheena was given a four-months sentence suspended for two years and 12 months supervision; Lubna was given a 12-month Community Order with 120 hours unpaid work and Asim a similar order with 80 hours unpaid work.

i used to work with a young muslim girl, who was very westernised shall we say. her family hated this and didnt want her socialising with the young white girls at work. if there was a girlie night out planned, she used to prentend she was doing a shift at work, then she would be "smuggled" by one of the girls to there house to get ready, and then afterwards she would be "smuggled" back to work just in time to be picked up by her relative. i used to feel really sorry for this girl, she clearly wanted to intergrated but there was no way her family would allow it. or so they thought anyway, lol

Everyone assumes this young girl was in full control of her faculties, as they assume the family were.
Maybe she needed supervision of her lifestyle, maybe her family thought so but over-reacted.
Without the full facts its unfair to blame racist activities.
It could be a social problem.

Having read this report, I can say without doubt, that this is absolute one sided clap trap.
The people posting are clearly only reading what they want to read and claiming it is to do with the Asian community.
Three of the people weren't Asian and the other people all have Britsh nationality.
I have never read such bias racist remarks. You should be ashamed.
It reads to me that a caring family set out to rescue their sister from the trouble she was clearly getting into. A pity other families can't do the same. Perhaps there would be less unmarried mums sucking up benefits
I think they tried to act with only concern for their family and for that I only have the greatest respect.
The British Justice system doesn't always get it right and it seems the tabloids only publish what they think is a "good story"
Perhaps if you look into the human interest side you will see the reason why all this was done was for love!

Would the story have had such a following if it had been a middle class English family rescuing their daughter.sister from a life of degradation?

Finally - someone with some sense! It's easy for you all to condemn what happened without knowing the full facts

The keyboard warriors with their tripe..

It might be worth noting that Sajid is married to a white girl and he was just protecting his sister !

Jayonel. It would seem that you have inside info!
I cannot detect the nationalities of the individuals from the report!
One English sounding name the rest sound Asian.
The kindness expressed by the family
seems overwhelming !
One brother thumped her, another threatened her with a hammer and finally she was forced to take a pregnancy test, these actions after she had been tricked and bundled into a car and taken to an empty house ! Strange family love or what ?
The girl has every right under a civilised law to conduct her own life as she pleases ! If she has British citizenship she is protected by British law, protected even from her own family.

jayonel,.nice reply to the thread mate, but by the sound of this thread, it would look to me as though the sister did not feel the need to be rescued, why would she mak such a fuss and then get battered about?,if as you say she was being rescued from a fate worse than death,no mate a fate worse than death is being a woman in an Asain Islamic world that is a fate worse than death.

this girl had every right to be protected from degradation and cruel batterings by her own flesh and blood. She was lured by liars from a 'safe haven' and they deserve to be stripped of their liberty.

People are quick to judge, the story does not say what type of lifestyle the teenager was leading that the family tried to remove her from. As quoted in the previous comment how can we judge if we don't have full facts to an incident? Young girls that are being groomed for sex usually are not aware of what is happening and usually object to admitting or 'being rescued' from such a lifestyle. I dont think culture or religion comes into this when genuine family concern is involved. If Sajid is married to a white girl and the other person charged Lee is also both white why would this have anything to do with having a problem with a western lifestle? I find it hard to believe how someone could be bundled into a car in broad daylight in a busy street without kicking up a fuss about it, and would the family have taken these measures without thinking they were rescuing her from a 'fate worse than death'? whats to say the accusations of violence are true? How many young girls fabricate stories of violence and cruelty implicated by their family sometimes just to be housed or live independently without having to work or pay for it? Its called abusing the system thats there to protect the real victims. Sometimes the justice system does get it wrong and instead of locking away caring fathers and husbands they should concentrate on protecting young girls from getting stuck in gangs that sexually exploit them.
