Blackburn girl, five, organisers fundraisers for charity that saved her grandma

A LITTLE girl is so grateful for her Grandma's recovery from cancer she is going to raise hundreds of pounds for the charity that helped to save her.

Five-year-old Madison Charnley, from Shadsworth, wants to raise at least £260.14 for Cancer Research - and has signed up to run with her mum Kelly and auntie Ashleigh in the Race for Life in June to help her do it.

She is only just old enough to take part in the five kilometre run in Witton Park after her birthday last month.

"Madison saw the advert for Race for Life on telly about a week ago and decided she wanted to raise money for her Nana," said mum Kelly Charnley, 23. "Nana was diagnosed with throat cancer before Madison was born but got the all-clear last year.

"The £260 is just a random number she's picked but she wants to raise the 14p because we live at number 14. I don't think she realises that £260 is a lot of money, though."

The Shadsworth Infant School pupil has also organised a jumble sale at an empty shop in Accrington Road from Thursday to Saturday where there will be home-made cakes and cards on offer.

Madison's looking forward to running the shop and she showed real enterprising spirit to get it. Kelly said: "She's really excited. The shop is owned by the man from Hot and Tender, the takeaway next door. Madison went into Hot and Tender and just asked if she could use the shop and he said yes.

"We'll be selling off jumble like clothes, jigsaws and books. Madison is going to help make the cakes and I'm going to do the cards."

Madison's auntie, Ashleigh McAlly, 22, said: "Madison can't wait to play shop lady. We'll have tea and coffee and we've got tickets to the cinema to give away in a raffle."

All three are doing their best to get as many people as they can to come along. Kelly said: "We've put an event on Facebook and I'm going to ring the local radio. Hopefully a lot of people will come and Madison's persuading all her friends at school."

Madison's Nana, 57-year-old Janette Charnley, beat throat cancer but now suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). She said: "Madison's a good kid. I'm very proud of her."
