Help Darwen teenager clean up town

A teenager wants residents to join him on a community clean-up after growing fed up of the council’s ‘invisible’ response to litter blight.

Student Elliott Gazdula, 17, of Chapter Road, is a member of the Darwen and Rural Neighbourhood Board, and has been removing litter from areas in Marsh House ward with the help of fellow board member Nicky Hargreaves and councillors Chris Thayne and Simon Huggill.

He said: “I have complained about the situation since January to Blackburn with Darwen Council but it became clear that nothing was going to happen.

"Therefore I took action into my own hands.”

Since the start of the month, Elliott has cleaned an alley behind Rosehill terrace, a wooded area at the end of Priory Drive, and a similar area at the side of Pole Lane and Sough Road.

But he said: “Much more needs to be done. I beg of people, regardless of where they live in Darwen, not to ignore the litter within our town and just walk past it.

"It’s that type of attitude that has got our town into this state.”

Coun Alan Cottam, of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “The council has experienced difficulty with street cleansing since January due to the weather problems.

"The amount of rubbish in adopted back streets has been considerably higher than normal.

“During winter, the litter clearing on grassed areas is limited, with increased resources to cater for litter on grassed areas re-introduced from March each year, in line with grass cutting services.”

Thank you for taking an interest in the conditions/surroundi
ngs of our streets. There is a problem at 112 Olive Lane that I've tried to have solved by BwD Environmental for God knows how long. There's rubbish piled up in their garden front that they obviously don't give a s... about. The street cleaner comes around but only picks up from the sidewalk; because the rubbish is inside the 'garden wall' they won't pick it up!!!! Also, there's water pouring out of the overflow pipe, and has been for the past four or five years, that's been reported to BwD Environmental Dept., who told me to contact OFFWAT, which I did, but they're dragging their feet - no surprise there. Where do you go? What do you do?...if you can't get the agencies who are supposed to be responsible to do something.

Phyllis, Kingston..try contacting your local councillor:
eileen.entwistle@bla
ckburn.gov.uk

She should be able to get some action regarding the overflow pipe.

The rubbish in the garden front, however, is the responsibility of the homeowner. Coun Entwistle can find out the property owner for you (is the house rented ?) and residents can write to the owner.

If the rubbish contains foodstuffs (or other items that attract rats) then environmental health can become involved.

Phyllis, it's not just Olive Lane, it's the whole Sudell area which is an utter disgrace regarding rubbish, with overflowing bins, flytipped rubbish, beer cans, takeaway cartons, etc, etc. Also, whining, barking dogs shut in back yards day in, day out and boarded up properties. And who causes all this? I would like to bet it's the rented properties where the irresponsible tenants don't seem to care about the environment, and the private landlords, as long as they're getting their rents turn a blind eye. Landlords should be FORCED to tidy up their properties (and have some responsibility for their tenants) or have them repossessed.

Can we have a bit of a poll on here please? How many "keyboard warriors" will turn up to help with a mass litter picking exercise if young Elliott organises one?

Yes, that sounds like a good idea, pay your Council Tax, which includes an element for street cleaning, then go out and clean them yourselves! Then two weeks later it will be just as bad. There are measures in place which could be enforced to solve this problem if the council would just take an interest.

I'll take that as a "no" then voxpopuli! Looks like another one of our proud townsfolk who just expects "them" to do everything rather than taking action personally. You are quite correct that there are ways to enforce and prosecute those creating a litter and pollution nuisance. Hard part is catching those responsible. The solution is get it clean, monitor and prosecute offenders and educate. Best place to start educating is with the young as they will act as our future guardians. I would happily work self employed fining those that litter as long as I could keep half of the proceeds from the fines - that includes all those who throw fag ends everywhere.

I would.

I take my hat off to young Elliott.
.
I would gladly help in the Bold Venture Area of Darwen and am sure many of my neighbours would too.
.
I recently cleared up the bottom field on Borough Road after the bout of snow when litter and broken sledges were left and bagged it up neatly on the corner of the field, I then rang Environmental Health and asked if they could arrange for someone to pick it up. I was told I personally would be charged or could I not put it in my own small purple bin? To which I said no.
.
It was cleared a few weeks later when all the residents in the terraced houses complained to EH.

Elliott Gazdula is a member of Darwen and Rural Neighbourhood Board and this is one of his priorities. As a Darrener I would like to use this public forum to thank Elliott for his efforts. We need young people like Elliott to help educate and transform the Darwen (and Rural) that many of us know and love. I see here that one contributor has asked who would help if mass litter picking exercises were performed and I'm delighted to see a couple of positive reponses. Every member of D&RNB wants to see an improvement in our environment and we all support projects such as this. I feel confdent that we can initiate a litter picking project as part of the "Clean It Up" section of our plan. Elliott is keen to lead on this and I look forward to turning out with my wellies and gloves in the near future under his direction.

Well done Elliott. You have restored my faith in human nature. I do not live in Darwen, but I sincerely hope that people turn out to support you. I hope that those who are the cause of the mess feel ashamed of themselves. I often pick up litter near my home, but sometimes I think the problem is becoming too big. The council ought to make every householder accept that they have a part to play. Many people in Blackburn with Darwen have no idea what a sweeping brush is for!!

A young guy stands up to be counted and does something positive and all you can do is mock him.

You're pathetic.

Phyllis, I've e-mailed Cllr Davies and Iam going to try and get the rubbish moved with him over the next couple of days.
I have seen front garden a number of times and it's not on!

voxpopuli, Sudell is the next priority for me and whoever else once to help. It's letting our town down.

Happycyclist , Are you saying he does not look like stig ? Unfortunatally I have to work all day 6 days a week in order to pay amongst other things council tax which should inturn pay for the streets to be cleaned . One thing I will not be doing is working all week and in my spare time cleaning up other scruffy Bastards mess . I am afraid Stig is fighting a battle that he cannot win . Also I hope you hit one of the many potholes whilst your out on your penny farthing and maybe lose a couple of teeth ....Pratt

One of the biggest problems is people dropping litter in the first place. If people were more considerate then Elliot (and many other young and older people like him) wouldn't need to be engaged in projects like this.

Living on a key route I suffer badly with litter in my front garden, my drive and my back yard. Most of the rubbish in my bin each week is other people's litter that ends up in my property.
