Earby teens say ‘sorry’ for church vandalism

THREE teenagers who vandalised a church have apologised for their actions.

In youth court, the teens admitted smashing windows at All Saints Church, Earby, causing £15,000 worth of damage in September.

They also pleaded guilty to burglary with intent to cause damage at the former vicarage next to the church.

As part of their punishment, three of the four teenagers involved agreed to attend a meeting with church members as part of a restorative justice order, which allows offenders to make amends directly to the people or organisations they have harmed.

Restorative justice co-ordinator Christine Taylor said: “Everyone sat together and the members of the church were given the chance to ask questions and impress upon the teenagers the financial and emotional impact their actions had caused.

“The youths saw photographs of the damage to the church and saw the scaffolding that was up replacing the broken windows and could clearly see the gravity of their actions.”

One of the youths said: “Going back to the church made me really understand what we had done and it made me feel really bad.

"The people from the church were nice to us and we were able to say sorry for what we had done.”

Another youth said: “I realised that what we did was wrong and how upset we had made people. I will never do something like this again.”

The meeting facilitator, PC Karl Pickles, said the youths had responded well and apologised for what they had done.

“Their parents were also given the chance to speak and said how ashamed they had been by the incident,” he said.

One parent said: “I was really apprehensive about the meeting as I expected the members of the church to be very angry, but they were really forgiving and I was glad the children had a chance to say sorry and give something back to the church.”

Churchwarden Vera Cocker said the meeting had been a success, adding: “We were able to get our issues off our chest and put what happened behind us.

“We just want to draw a line under what has happened and hope that the children have learnt their lesson and will behave better in future.”

Mrs Stott said two of the teenagers would carry out voluntary work at the church.

They apologise when they get caught, plain to see this is a tactic to get a lighter sentence. These people feel no guilt and will continue to make lives a misery for others. Their parents need to get a grip of them. They are a plague. Tougher sentences are required.

All I can say (but atypical I am sad to say) is that the wardens of this church but must be very naive to think that this absolves these children of this crime.

The idea is to ensure they don't think about doing such things in the first place. In other words: learning right from wrong and having parents who actually CARE enough to teach or show them that. Trouble is given the attrociously now level of things like this spreading it would now seem that we have thousands of families in this country who take the mickey out the phrase 'broken families'. 'Broken families' is now the new 'norm' it seems.

Combat this from the route upwards, you cannot hope to stem the tide unless you do. Make these families, their children take responsibility for their actions. Punish them, do whatever it takes to stop them because unless someone does start taking radical (well, not so radical but what SHOULD be getting done from day one) steps to shake these families up in this country.

We have children roaming the streets well into the early hours, parents obviously couldn't give a bloody toss where they are. Yet they always seem to get round social services with some pathetic excuses when they come knocking. Don't care whatever do-gooders use to excuse this but there is something deeply wrong when we persistently reasd about such things. It's very Victorian for a start! And things that were common a long time ago. But wait this is the 21st century, so why are children being allowed to destroy, wreck, worse, mug, attack, murder even either one another or adults. Something's very wrong with this picture. Because they don't get punished. Maybe John Wyndham had something going in his tale of children controlling everyone in 'The Midwich Cuckoos' because certainly children ARE controlling society by the mere fact they go unpunished! What does this teach them, then? Forget schools, forget churches, forget learning ... because the thing they SHOULD be learning is overlooked: a set of morals.

The destruction of anything good in this country is going to become permanent unless someone stops all of it. There is still a chance to turn things around, a very slim one. But it will never happen with the naive views of the above wardens who consider saying sorry makes up for it. It doesn't! Wake up, take a look around the streets and actually START taking notice of what goes on in them. Before your society in the UK reaches the point of no return and those left living in it desperately want to get the hell out of it but can't. An elastic band only stretches so far before it flys back on itself.

What is there to say?
Fine their so called parents for the damage done and leave it up to them to get the money back from their offspring’s pocket money over time. Plus interest to a good cause.
If they are so low enough to do such a crime then they should pay it back.

Simple. Why not, Jack man of Straw!

not the full story here.also damage at the house next to the church.their parents are all on the dole.that explains a lot.police told the church to claim off the insurance and not the parents.no wonder my insurance keeps going up.we need to get these parents back into work,if they have ever been in work in the first place.make them pay for the damage and send them on parental classes.the kids need a spell in the real world.take their wii's gameboys off them to pay for the damage
