Accrington mum dies after three-day fight for life

THE mother of a toddler killed by an out-of-control car in Accrington town centre has died.

Jackie Bloomer, 30, passed away tonight at Royal Preston Hospital, three days after the horrific crash which also took the life of her 18-month-old son Jayden.

The 89-year-old driver of the vehicle, Alfred Ernest Wray, also died following the smash in Eastgate, opposite the junction with Water Street.

After the car struck Mrs Bloomer, it then hit Jayden’s pushchair, pinning it against the corner of The Old Tannery building in Eastgate.

She suffered multiple injuries in the accident and was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital before being transferred to Preston for more specialist treatment.

Throughout the past three days her husband Chris has kept a vigil at her bedside.

Police said that Mrs Bloomer, who is also the mother of six-year-old Declan, died at just after 8pm tonight.

Officers said her family had volunteered her organs for donation so that she could help others after her death.

A terrible and tragic incident for all concerned. Is it time to introduce compulsory re-testing for elderly drivers?

anyone could suffer a medical problem that renders them incapacitated behind the wheel, not just elderly drivers. it`s just a tragic sequence of events, a cruel twist of fate.

what utter rubbish JPB!! this man was 89 years old!!! 89!!! I agree that anyone could suffer a medical problem when behind the wheel but at 89 years old the chance of this happening is VERY likely!! Not just that but their reaction time and vision is not what it was either.
There aren't even that many people who get to the grand old age of 89 never mind still drive! It was a tragic tragic sequence of events and it has affected our town a lot, I know Jackies husband and I cannot imagine what he is going through right now, god bless you Chris and Declan, our thoughts and prayers are with you both xxx

Still driving at 89yrs-old is asking for trouble, even without dying at the wheel and taking two young people with you.
Reaction times for someone that age will be woefully too slow for modern traffic, which is more like a chariot race than a transport system these days.
Drivers over a certain age already have to have medical checks on a regular basis - HGV and PSV drivers have to have them starting at age 45 and every 5yrs thereafter - so why not a test of a driver's capabilities as a road user starting at age 70 ?
It wouldn't have to be a full test, merely an assessment of reaction times and traffic awareness.
After 75, it should be done every year and your licenced should be automatically cancelled at age 85.

so so sad. I don't know either family but the story made me cry - my heart goes out to the little boy who has lost his mummy and brother and to the husband who has lost his wife and a son. Such a tragic waste of life. RIP

Whilst most sympathy is rightly directed to the Bloomer family the critiscism of Ernest Wray upsets me greatly. He was a true gentle man and a man I respected deeply. His family, including his wife of 60+ years are doubly suffering because of the nature of the tradgedy. I happen to agree that there need to be improved medical and competency tests, but I thought that before last Tuesday. Now is not the time for anger, for cursing a lovely man but for supporting those we know who have been caught up in theese events.

Chris and Declan. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both and they will be for a long time. Look after each other and help each other through this. Little Jayden needed to be with his Mummy! I hope knowing they are together and looking down on you both will give you some comfort.
Yours and Jackie's parents' strength and bravery in donating on Friday speaks volumes about you. You are in the thoughts and prayers of people in your own town and the rest of Lancashire.
