BARNOLDSWICK Town Council has cut its budget and level of council tax for 2010/11.
The council agreed a proposal from Liberal Democrat councillors to reduce its council tax demand by £5,000, but have vowed to invest in the town this year. Despite the cut in council tax, members voted to increase spending on hanging baskets, grants to voluntary organisations, allotments, and improvements to Christmas decorations. The council also agreed to fund a “Backing Barlick” promotion, a series of “Barlick Pride” improvement schemes and a calendar of “Eventful Barlick” activities.
Coun David Whipp said the town council’s crackdown on administrative costs meant that the budget could be cut while investment in improvements continued.
He said: “This budget is about boosting Barlick for residents, making it a better place to live.
“The funding will help clear up eyesores and make the town livelier.”
The total expenditure for 2010/11 is estimated at £109,590 and, after taking into account a £16,038 grant from Pendle Council, reserves of £11,452 and other income of £2,100, the town’s precept has been set at £80,000.
