COUNCILLORS in Burnley took to the streets to spread grit themselves.

Burnley Council leader Gordon Birtwistle, son Justine and executive member Charlie Briggs were joined by staff from housing association Galico as they spread grit in the town's Gannow ward.

Coun Birtwistle said: “The county council took the decision not to grit side roads so we went out and bought two tonnes of road-thaw grit ourselves.

“It cost the council around £650 but we thought it was important for the safety of residents.

“We shovelled the grit in places were children and elderly people walk because they are most vulnerable.”
