East Lancashire snow: ‘Despicable’ yobs ambush gritter

BARRICADE: Youths built snow bollards across Dunoon Drive, Blackburn, blocking the gritter BARRICADE: Youths built snow bollards across Dunoon Drive, Blackburn, blocking the gritter

A GANG of youths have been criticised after ‘ambushing’ a gritter on Monday night, preventing it from treating side streets in the Shadsworth area of Blackburn.

A group of a dozen teenagers built a series of three-foot high snow bollards which, combined with parked cars, made it impassable for the plough and gritting vehicle.

Councillor Jim Shorrock said the behaviour was “despicable”.

He said: “We are having great difficulty in Shadsworth as it is with a lack of gritting, and grit bins not being filled.

“So to purposely stop the ploughs from coming down is despicable.

“Of course we want the kids to have fun.

“But they must keep the roads clear so that emergency services, and services for elderly people, can make their way through.”

These yobs did the same in brave little gangs (cowards) in Darwen yesterday to people. Agree with Hellboy, name them. Then at least the rest of the public can avoid them out on the street. Those imbeciles in Darwen yesterday were unavoidable because they ambushed vehicles, pedestrians in areas, streets they knew people were boxed in once they started. It was then made worse by older track suited chavs whom acted like their 'gang bosses' making verbal threats to anyone who tried to tackle the scum. There were no police or community patrols out. So, yet again, these gangs in Darwen - and probably today as well until they go back to school - are allowed to assault people. For starters, who knows what is in these snowballs? Needles, syringes even? These are far from ordinary children having 'fun in the snow' but maliscious little monsters who prefer to bully, intimidate the rest of the public from their own little corner of blighted England. Yet get one of them on their own in a cornered situation they'd soon be crying their eyes out. Well, good. Because people are sick of you and your uncivilized ways. Let's all go snowball your homes. Nah, you'd probably enjoy that sort of thing. Such is your mentality.

Like Hellboy, it WAS infuriating watching the cowardly little twerps doing all this. Infuriating because you knew if you called the police you'd be told off for wasting their time. So who do we turn to? As Hellboy correctly points out - and we've sadly seen in news reports - if you try to tackle these people you never know what they will do and you are likely to have bones broken or end up dead. It's because these imbeciles aren't being punished for this by the authorities that they are DOING it. In Darwen last weekend a gang of 10 youths brutally attacked four people in the town centre. Will they be caught? Doubt it, given there was another report - guess what involving? - a few months ago with TEN youths involved so obviously they weren't caught from the last time. So, it takes 10 of you to pick on one person does it? How brave of you. Just one of you on your own would go screaming to your mummy or daddy (if you have one in this day and age or even know who it is and not the last man out your front door) if you tried it. So, you go round in gangs because you are cowards.

If we try to deal with them ourselves in numbers these same gang members are very skilled at making up tales so that they get off and you are the one in trouble. And if we try to deal with it ourselves the law is most definitely not on our side.

It's high time our streets were taken back and these people driven out of our communities once and for all.

GANGS = COWARDS.

Best thing to do is get a small JCB, dig up large scoops of snow and fill their drivesways, front and back and box the little chavs in!

I had the unhappy experience of once living on a council estate and any sane person knows that alot of kids on these estates have crap parents who spend the day drinking smoking and doing sod all else. Not great role models for the kids who then get the attention elsewhere by causing trouble.

Will apologists stop making excuses for the people? So what if they live on estates? That automatically means, then, they should behave like that does it? Don't think so! Stop blaming other people for what they do. It's not the rest of the publics responsibility to a) tolerate them or b) be their nursemaids.

I've just watched a news item on Granada Reports about a house in Blackburn where just one family - not a housing estate BTW - terrorised the entire street. What excuse do they have? They were evicted from the house by police in the end. Sorry, but people choose to behave in this way, they can always choose not to do so. Like the rest of us in society does.

Violence is not the answer but unless someone, somewhere does things it will get worse. Granada Reports also released results of a survey undertaken in Lancashire over reports of anti-social behaviour: over 13000 reports per month, last August that rose to over 14000. Burnley was listed as the second highest in the UK for the worst anti-social behaviour with Pendle second.

All people want is to be able to live in safety and peace. That has been taken from them. It's simply not right that people are too afraid to leave their homes in some areas during the day or night. One in the GR feature, a teacher, said she had to water her plants at night for fear of harassment by the family. The other resident had faeces daubed on her back wall by the family.

When the police showed up the house to serve papers, the fact the lady opening the door was so shocked they had arrived summed up the fact that they didn't even know they were causing problems.

People just want to live in safe communities. As they should be able to.

Davidoff says...

It's increasing in the region. Do we allow it or do we get back what was lost? Children are and were given far too many rights is where the problem has arisen and respect went with it. For years those same children have known they can get away with anything and not get punished. It's nothing to do with housing estates, it's everything to do with how laws have changed. It is everything to do with the breakdown in society that if people know they can get away with it, then get away with it they will.

Yet, those same apologists dial 999 when it happens to them no doubt. To those same apologists, are you aware these 'children' carry knives? Or worse? Act as drug mules? Yes, for people living in such areas this is a very real problem. In problem areas. These are hardly activities children should be indulging in yet have been for quite a while now.

Maybe the council should concentrate on the main routes around the borough, then those who need to get to work in this atrocious weather stand half a chance. The main road in Darwen across from India mill is badly encroached by snow and ice, showing the distinct lack of grit in the area....but side roads in Shadsworth are a priority now are they?!?!?!? What do I pay my council tax for ????

Thank you very much for your support of my comment,Davidoff(whi
ch was removed by the LET...I wonder why?),and I agree with your comments in regards to this article wholeheartedly!
To those who think that Shadsworth is full of chav-scum,think again;there are a majority of Shadsworth residents(you did catch that didn't you...? A MAJORITY!)who have had to endure lowlife scum like this lot for MANY years.
We have been let down by Twin Valleys, the Police AND local Councillors,so all you detractors of the Shadsworth area should get your facts right before assuming that all of us are nothing more than filth.
Thankfully, there are intelligent people like Davidoff who understand that the minority are the problem, not normal,hard-working people(there are many in this area)who just want to go about their day-to-day business without being victimised by the Local Yokels AND idiots making sweeping statements on here who seem to be living in some Utopian ideal from their Ivory Towers...

Are you a Social Worker?! By the tone of your comment, you are the type that would happily give a 10 year old knife-wielding thug a pat on the head and a lollypop,as 'it's not his fault' that he's carrying the blade in the first place!
deluded retards like you just come on sites like this to pontificate about how YOU think society should be,regardless of the REAL facts because by standing up for the local monkeys gives you a feeling of importance...I hope that the next time some nasty little toerag decides to make you his target so that he can show off to his mates, you won't bother ringing the police,as that would make you the ultimate hypocrite.
And I am not a psychopath, just a normal individual that has had enough of bleeding-heart liberals like you defending the lowlife and vermin that now infest our towns and cities.

I live in Bolton, but I take my daughter to a girls group on Shads estate because I prefer the kids there.
Most of them are down to earth. They dont bully and hurt each other as they are all pretty much in the same boat.
However, the lads that hang about outside, under 14's mostly, are little gits.
I grew up on every bad estate there was when I lived down south, my parents smoked and drank. They also had special needs. My family were notorious for trouble of one kind or another. However, my siblings and like to consider ourselves good people, taxpayers etc. My children are achievers in a affluent area (full of bullying spoilt brats incidently) and they are respectful and well spoken.
The problems I feel are that incresingly now, children are raised by nurseries and schools, who do not teach morals and who have little power of control, only to go home to parents who have been working hard all day and have little time for them.
Lots of these kids only have peers to be family to them. They group together and amalgamate all that is bad and attention seeking, they have no-one controlling them as it is now everyone elses job.
Perhaps the economic downturn will mean, more parents raising their children.

we do have a 'chav' problem in the county and it is getting out of hand, after hearing about these groups causing hell for fire crews and damaging their vehicles and now them blocking gritters from doing (at this time of year) a vital job i think they have crossed the line, the term youth (as an 18 year old myself) is quite offensive as we are not all bad people i would never think to stop a gritter from doing its job, it could result in myself crashing my car or damage a fire truck as one day this could be the thing which saves my life. It's the ones that decide to fall in with the wrong crowd, listen to the wrong people and then get dragged down with this whole ASBO society. And now i sit hear asking myself why didn't the driver of the plough just go through the 3ft snow as the vehicle is designed to cope with that level of snow, and if the offenders happened to get in the way then it's their own fault really. If there was an accident on that stretch of road and someone was killed it would be the fault of those harrasing the driver and stopping him/her doing their job, but the law would do nothing because they can't, if they could then we wouldn't have this anit social behaviour problem that we do today.
