A MOUNTAIN rescue team leader has blamed the icy weather for making the past two weeks the busiest he has known in 16 years.
Up to December 18 Andy Simpson said his Rossendale and Pendle mountain rescue team had attended 56 jobs since the turn of the year.
However, by the end of December that figure had soared to 82 and the team has already been called out 11 times in two days this year.
Andy said many of the call-outs involved helping paramedics whose ambulances had become stuck in snow or on icy surfaces.
He said his team was even called upon to help a Haslingden woman who had gone into labour.
They have also transported kidney dialysis patients from home to hospital and helped people with injuries caused by falls and slips.
Over the weekend, he said they also came to the aid of a woman who broke her arm after falling during a walk up Pendle Hill.
