CAR crashes in East Lancashire have nearly doubled in the past fortnight’s big freeze compared to the same period last year.
Official statistics show that between Monday, December 21, 2009 and Monday, January 4, 2010, 197 collisions were reported to the police.
During the same two-week spell last year only 123 accidents were reported.
However, only twenty five injuries were reported in these accidents, compared to 22 last year.
Sergeant Pete Sculpher said: “I urge people to take extra care and drive according to the conditions of the road.
"Motorists need to be patient with each other and allow for the conditions.
"Make sure you keep your distance from the car in front and drive at an appropriate speed.”

I was travelling over the Pennines on Christmas Eve when a lorry came past at 70 mph while we were doing 30mph max in snow covered Motorway. Can't say I felt at all guilty when we passed him ten mins later facing (cab) the wrong way in central res.
as a professional lorry driver i see theres a lot of car drivers who cant handle this bad weather and drive really slow i feel like putting a couple of tyres on my front bumper and bulldozing them out the way, amen
