4,000 Lancashire TVs dumped since digital switchover

THOUSANDS more televisions have been consigned to the scrapheap as a result of the digital switchover.

Nearly 4,000 extra sets have been dumped across Lancashire since it was announced that the nation’s old analogue sets were being phased out.

Viewers can invest in a set-top box for as little as £15, from most leading supermarkets, to join the TV revolution.

But with an ever-increasing range of plasma and widescreen models on the market, most consumers to be plumping for a new set.

Harold Council, operations manager for SITA, which manages sites across East Lancashire, said: “We have seen a steady increase throughout the year and we have seen TVs and monitors arriving.”

Back in June the number of sets left at household waste recycling centres stood at just over 13,200.

There was a slight increase by July and the total jumped to 16,167 by August. For October, the figure stood at 17,187.

In East Lancashire, the two busiest sites have been the Burnley tip, in Grosvenor Street, which has seen 630 abandoned sets, and the Whinney Hill Road site near Accrington, the final resting place for 490 old TVs.

The firm also manages sites in Clitheroe, Colne, Great Harwood, Langho, Padiham and Stacksteads.

Each location taking electrical goods has reported a proport-ionate increase through 2009.

Government officials are still staging advice clinics for TV viewers ahead of the final analogue switch-off in a fort-night’s time.

BBC2 has already disappeared from analogue TV screens and the remainder of the terrestrial channels will disappear after December 5.

Probably get sold to India or China to sit in their landfills I'd have thought.

Add my digi box to this list, it was not able to receive any BBC channels after the upgrade and I was informed it was now defunct.

Can I have one of those "useless" tv sets for my son's xbox? are they for sale .
I had the same problem as Michael with my digibox not receiving BBC.The simple solution is to reset the box through the menu and then go to the add new channers section on the menu and the BBC channels appear by magic. It worked for me a treat.
