Blackburn newsagent disappointed at cigarette display ban vote

AN East Lancashire newsagents spokesman says he's disappointed after MPs voted to ban tobacco from being displayed in shops.

The Health Bill, which also includes a ban on cigarette vending machines, was passed by the Commons last night.

It will now be considered by the House of Lords and could mean cigarettes removed from display by 2013.

Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, said: “We are delighted that MPs have voted to protect young people from tobacco marketing.

”Putting tobacco out of sight in shops and removing cigarette vending machines will help reduce the number of young people taking up a lethal addiction: tobacco kills half of all long term users.”

But Blackburn councillor Suleman Khonat, who is national president of the National Federation of retail Newsagents (NFRN), said: “We are very disappointed that tobacco displays are scheduled to be removed from 2013 in small stores.

”Independent newsagents truly support the Department of Health’s efforts in reducing smoking overall but this legislation has been ill thought-out and will be ineffective.

"The NFRN has always believed that there were other, more effective, actions that the Government could take to stop youngsters smoking, such as making proxy purchasing of cigarettes by adults for children illegal, making it illegal for children to purchase cigarettes in shops, and for greater action to be taken against tobacco smugglers who have no concerns about selling tobacco to minors.”

More than 18,000 independent news and convenience retailers are members of the NFRN.

His profit is more important than the health of his customers and the subsequent cost to the NHS ?

Shop keepers are not the only people who is disappointed with this cigarette display ban, every body who supports adults freedom of choice, divercity, equality and human rights is also disappointed in this governments action, as this silly ban has nothing to do with protecting children from smoking and all to do with dictatership. Everyboby knows this, but the gullible brainwashed people is the only ones who is over joyed with this pointless ban.

Another silly diktat from the supreme soviet. One which, in the real world, will not stop kids or anyone else starting to smoke, or cease if they have already started. As it is quite legal for Mr Khonat's members to sell tobacco, all the kids have to do is ask for it - there being none on show won't make the slightest difference. Do you really think the kids of today - well versed in the aquisition of cannabis and other controlled drugs - will have any difficulty getting a few coffin nails?? Credit them with some intelligence!
In the meantime, Mr Khonat's members will have to get the shop fitters in to rearrange their shops at huge expense, and the ciggy machine operators will go bust. Just absolutly bonkers - just like large amounts of this p**s poor governments legislation.
I had hoped there was some decency left in the Labour party and its MP's, and they would ditch Brown at the Conference. But no: it seems they are to shuffle the deckchairs looking for the best seat as the ship of state - and the country - goes down the pan. Did you notice that Baroness Amos (who she? you may ask) has bailed out and found a nice earner for the next few years as High Commissioner in Australia. I'm sure that will go down like a lead balloon in Oz!!

As a Blackburn councillor you should put other peoples intrest first, not your own.

If people want to smoke - fine! Go ahead and exercise your freedom. I just object to footing the NHS bill. Smokers are welcome. They will be instrumental in reducing the population of our over-crowded world.

Hi All.

Smokers pay for the NHS!

This is Hitler tactics, he banned smoking to prevent gatherings to prevent the spread of information, and to create the tell tale society.

why does a blackburn councillor think that it is ok to sell poisonous cancer sticks when all the evidence suggests that it's bad for you. Not only that but is it not against Islam to take something bad for you such as alcohol, pork, cocaine ect.......

Ha ha! Anyone else remember the scary posters warning "New Labour, New Danger"?
The creature from the black lagoon with Tony Bliar's eyes was the best.
Ned Kelly was pretty funny, too.

This will never work;what about parents who give underage children cigarettes and condone smoking by them and allowing it? They should be targeted and punished by taking their kids into care and them being jailed as well. It's the condonance and deliberate ignorance by parents towards underage smoking that causes many problems.

Kids will still get hold of cigarettes despite this.

For god sakes, if people smoke they're not gonna stop because there are no displays up! Or is he worried the younger people might not start buying because they're not reminded of the cancer sticks whenever they go in his shop?
