THE wife of Blackburn Rovers stalwart Tony Parkes has lost her year-long battle with cancer.

Eileen Parkes, 61, was diagnosed with bone cancer last year and died at her home in Wilpshire on October 1.

Tony said he was too upset to comment today.

Tom Finn, managing director of Blackburn Rovers FC, led the tributes.

He said: "Everyone connected with the club is deeply saddened by the news of Eileen's passing.

"We would like to record our deepest condolences to Tony, one of our most popular personalities in modern times.

"We saw a lot of Eileen during Tony's long association with Rovers, not only at matches but also at social functions, and she was always a great support.

"It goes without saying that our thoughts are very much with Tony and his family at this distressing time."

Mr Parkes had a 34-year stint at the club as player, coach, assistant manager and six-time caretaker boss.

The 59-year-old left the club in November 2004 and went on to become the caretaker boss at Blackpool Football Club.

However, he left this role in May this year in order to take care of his wife.

Eileen also leaves a daughter, Natalie.
