BLACKBURN’S parking problems have prompted the council to make another town centre car park free for weekend shoppers.

Town centre leaders have welcomed the decision to make the Jubilee House car park free on a Saturday and Sunday in a bid to ease the shortage of spaces caused by redevelopment work.

It comes after Blackburn College agreed to make its car park off St Paul’s Street and Feilden Street available to shoppers throughout August.

The car park in Jubilee Street, which is owned by Blackburn with Darwen Council, was previously used by employees based at Jubilee House when it was open.

Signs have been placed on the car park to inform members of the public about the new free parking.

It will be used by permit holders Monday to Friday and will be available until the development of the area begins in early New Year.

Councillor Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration and environment, said: “We are working hard to address the current town centre parking problems and this is yet another temporary solution to help traders and shoppers.”

Retailers, particularly in the Darwen Street area of the town centre, welcomed the move.

Phil Ainsworth, from Ainsworth’s Jewellers in Darwen Street, Blackburn said: “I am delighted that the council are working pro-actively with retailers to identify areas for car parking in the town centre.

“This is a great initiative which will bring shoppers into town.”

The college car parks have always been free at weekends.

Weekday restrictions, including clamping, will resume when the college reopens in September.
