A WOMAN whose father died after jumping from a multi-storey car park is spearheading a campaign for the building to be demolished.

Claire Judson said she was grief-stricken for years after her dad, Jimmy Haselden, plunged from the Pendle Rise shopping centre, Nelson, in 2003.

Following a number of similar deaths at the site, dubbed a suicide ‘hot spot’, she has now launched a campaign to have it pulled down.

More than 500 people have signed up to a group on social networking website Facebook and more than 70 have signed an online petition.

But the 26-year-old, of Berriedale Road, Nelson, is hoping to get enough people to convince the own-ers to knock down the “eyesore”.

According to Miss Judson, her father became depressed after his father died and began to self-harm before eventually committing suicide.

In the last decade there have been more than five similar deaths at the site, in Holme Street.

Earlier this month, 4D Properties Ltd, which runs the centre, refused to pledge funds towards improving safety measures at the multi-storey.

Miss Judson said the number of similar deaths combined with the lack of action had inspired her to launch the campaign.

She added: “It was a really bad experience and a big shock to the system when my dad died, but lately I have felt ready to do something.

“The owners don’t seem bothered about human rights.

“They have left it too long without doing anything.”

The Facebook group, which has 550 members, is called ‘I’m Sick of Looking at the Multi Storey in Nelson’.

Some other members also affected by deaths at the site have called for it to be knocked down instead of safety measures being enhanced.
