Breakthrough in sight on Clitheroe parking scheme

A CONTROVERSIAL residents parking scheme in Clitheroe looks set to go ahead after businesses and residents edged towards an agreement.

The saga to create a scheme covering Church Brow, Church Street, York Street and Albion Street began more than four years ago when Lancashire County Council made a commitment to introduce the plan.

Since then the issue has been debated by county and borough councillors, as well as residents and town centre firms who say a loss of parking will damage their trade.

But a report to next week’s Lancashire Local committee suggests the feuding parties have now found common ground, a view backed by the head of the Clitheroe town centre parking committee.

Ian Sowerbutts, chairman of the town centre committee, said: “A lot still depends on next week’s meeting.

"But we are pleased, that after three years of discussions, the Community Parking Scheme group has finally made a reduction in their demands for continuous 24-hour parking on streets.”

A proposal to next week’s Lancashire Local committee suggests a scheme that would incorporate 91 parking bays.

After meetings between councillors and the two parking groups, all residents bays are now to made shared access, with non-permit holders subject to limited waiting up to two hours.

A reduction has also been made in the number of permits from 128 to 64.

The plan will be considered at Wednesday’s Lancashire Local committee meeting, at Ribblesdale High School, Queen Street, Clitheroe, from 6pm.
