A PENDLE village school has been commended for its ‘green’ credentials in a borough-wide compet-ition.

Barrowford School, in Rushton Street, scooped the Big Green Safe Challenge trophy after coming top in an inter-school quiz which tested pupils’ knowledge of how to live in a more sustain-able way and how to stay safe on the roads when walking and cycling.

Other competing schools included Higham St John’s CE Primary, Blacko Primary, Wheatley Lane Methodist VA Primary, Roughlee CE Primary, Barrowford St Thomas CE Primary and Hendon Brook Short Stay School.

The schools which took part in the competition have already developed a School Travel Plan.

Wendy Bell, school travel plan adviser at Lancashire County Council, said: “It’s fantastic that each of these schools are committed to improving travel in the area.

“The plans are an important part of promoting sustainable travel to and from school as well as how families can travel day-to-day using environmentally-friendly and healthy options.”

The challenge was held at Higham St John’s and organised and sponsored by Lancashire County Council's School Travel Team working in partnership with Pennine Police.
