Hyndburn MP backs down after 10p tax rebellion pledge

AN EAST Lancashire Labour MP backed down on his plans to rebel against the Government’s 10p tax rate just hours before a major vote.

Hyndburn MP Greg Pope had helped lead the revolt over the 2007 abolition of the 10p tax rate, but he decided not to vote on an amendment to the finance bill.

Earlier Mr Pope, and fellow rebel Frank Field, had met Chancellor Alistair Darling who had warned them that their amendment would have brought the economy to its knees, and made the collection of all income tax invalid.

In the end the rebel move was defeated by 311 votes to 268.

Before the vote Mr Pope had told the Lancashire Telegraph he was determined to stand his ground over the issue, and did not mind being branded a rebel.

The rebels wanted everyone made worse off by the abolition of the 10p tax rate compensated by the Government, a move that would have cost hundreds and millions of pounds on lost tax revenue.

Mr Pope said: “I did not come into politics to make poor people poorer.”

Yesterday Mr Pope was unavailable for comment.

Should anyone be surprised the sheep always stay with the flock in the Labour Party. If he did not come into politics to make people poorer then why he did not rebel and why did he join the Labour Party they don't give a stuff about the working classes.

Hi All.

All the political parties in existence are controlled by the Crown networks.

This is the reason no matter which party has power locally or nationaly, the same old agenda keeps rolling on.

We can say we are living through the total destruction of a once great nation of great people.

I am now living in a nation of weak and feeble minds who have absolutely no get up and go whatever, and allow the muppets to do whatever they want, when they want.

No we shouldn't be afraid of the Tories. After 12 years of Labour wrecking this country, the country needs change. Under a Labour Government, I have never been worse off. Under Labour the rich have got richer and the poor have been hammered. It is Labour we should all be fearing.

Thankfully, Greg Pope is NOT standing for re-election. The people of Hyndburn deserve better from their elected representative. Obviously Mr. Pope et al, can be bought off too easily by the Labour dictatorship and would rather be a good party supporter than actually vote for what their constituents want.

My personal thoughts are that, regardless of political allegiances, YOUR MP should represent YOUR views and fight for YOUR rights!

That's fine when you have a vote in a General Election. Many second class citzens of Great Britain do not have a vote, and can therefore do nothing democratically. Thanks to NuLabour

Haven't got a clue what you are on about. Unless someone decides not to register for a vote, then voting is open to all British and some European citizens.

Even prisoners can now vote, thanks to the Human rights act!

I do agree however that Labour have tried to rid the country of democracy!

Sadly Doug you are not aware of the truth. The Representation of the Peoples Act 1984, amended in 2001 by the current Government states: "that any citzne who has lived abroad for more than 15 years is NOT entitled to stay on the electorial register and vote in the UK" This means that they can vote in the European elections and any local elections if they reside in the EU. But they cannot vote in any General Election in the UK and the rest of the world in fact. I wrote to the then Secretray of State (One, Desmond Browne) who replied that I should think my self lucky that I was not an Irish Citizen, who loose their voting rights as soon as they leave Ireland. What that has to do with me is beyond my comprehension.
I was sent abroad to work for the Crown, and after settling decided to stay as my family had settled, and I continued to vote in all elections in the UK, that is until they pulled the plug.
I was told that it had nothing to do with the European Human Rights act, but more a citizens rights issue. I have since found out that there are approximately 1.4 million other British Citizens who also do not have the right to vote in any general election unless they have dual nationality.
European citizens in teh UK have the right to vote in the UK for European elections and local elections if they are ordinarily resident in the UK.
So much for Democracy and its sad demise.
