YOUNGSTERS in Pendle are being offered the chance to hone self-defence skills in a bid to crack down on anti-social behaviour.
As part of the scheme, children aged eight to 15 years old can sign up to the free martial arts summer school, where they will be taught an introduction to the ancient Japanese art of ju-jitsu.
The classes will take place at Pendle Martial Arts Academy, in Colne Road, Brierfield, but the project is the brainchild of Police Community Support Officer Catherine Horner, who said a similar incentive in a neighbouring area has led to a reduction in anti-social behaviour.
Students who sign up to the course will receive a uniform, insurance to the club for a year and, on completion, will be graded to red belt status.
The course is due to be run on a Tuesday afternoon throughout the summer holidays at the club.
PCSO Horner said: “This is now the second year we have run this type of event. Last year we saw a very positive outcome with a reduction in anti-social behaviour in the Queensgate area, and it was great getting to know the children.
“There are still several students at the club who attended the scheme last year and they are all making good progress.”
The course has a very limited number of places.
Those wishing to apply must be between the ages of eight and 15 and live in the local area.
For an application pack contact PCSO Horner on 07961 065419. If there is no answer, then leave a message with contact details.
Pendle Martial Arts Academy trains six days a week in many different types of martial arts. For more information contact the academy on 01282 690216.

Despite what Pete 08 says I think it is daft idea. Not far from where I live there is scheme to help young folk to become car mechanics. All it does is help them to nick cars easier!

Thats it...trtain the next genersation of muggers to be expert!
Fear promotion is what this is about.
Reminding everyone that they may be attacked at any moment. The same way the police love to camp outside the Accrington poisonmarket - better known as the 'supermarket' on thursday...pension day, anmd terrify the pensioners that hell is coming and they had better take a personal alarm.
If this policed state moves on, the only people we need fear are the police.
Most criminals, which is code for : all those who have the courage to stand up and say 'NO' to the state bullies, are inside, to the cost of £36.000 per year per prisoner to we the taxpayers.
Why the prison system is set to grow :
