Mourner ejected from Blackburn Cathedral 'for looking like BNP member'

A MOURNER was ejected from Blackburn Cathedral then searched by police after church leaders thought he was a BNP troublemaker.

Phylllip Cadwallader, who had wanted to light a candle in memory of his mum, said he had been left angry and disgusted at the cathedral’s harsh judgement of him.

He was offered an ‘apology’ for their ‘unfounded suspicions’ which appear to have arisen because of his shaven head.

Mr Cadwallader said: “I am starting to go bald so I have my hair cut short to hide that, not because of my political persuasion."

The keen runner had stopped at Blackburn Cathedral at 8am on Sunday en route to a race in Accrington.

The 43-year-old, dressed in a shirt, pants and brogues, was told he could sit quietly while BBC Radio 4 conducted a live programme on concentration camp victim Anne Frank from inside the cathedral. But then moments later he was told he would have to leave.

After stepping outside, the former autism support worker was approached by police officers, who said they had been told he might be a BNP member trying to cause trouble because of the nature of the programme.

Mr Cadwallader, of Preston New Road, Blackburn, then had his rucksack, containing his running kit, searched.

He said: "I was really angry and embarrassed by the whole experience.

“The officers told me that someone had thought I was from the BNP because I was tall and have short hair, like a skinhead.”

His mother Phyllis died four years ago.

Mr Cadwallader said: "When I woke up in the morning and the sun was shining I thought it was such a lovely day that I would go and pay a tribute to my mum before I went running.

“The choir was singing in the background and it was lovely as I lit my candle.

“Then the Dean came and asked me to leave, but he wouldn't tell me why.

"As I was sat on a bench outside wait-ing for them to finish the radio programme a police officer came up to me and said she would need to check my bag. When they told me why I just couldn't believe it. I am not a BNP member. I was quite disgusted by it all.”

Police said they had been called to the cathedral because a man was believed to be acting suspiciously.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers spoke to Mr Cadwallader and had no concerns. “ Cathedral officials have offered an apology to Mr Cadwallader and said they had asked him to leave because of previous problems during radio broadcasts from the site.

Canon Chris Chivers said: "The last time we did a radio broadcast it was sabotaged when somebody pulled out wires.

"The BNP are known Holocaust deniers.

“The gentleman arrived two minutes before the programme went out live and it aroused suspicions. Obviously those suspicions were unfounded.”

Like them or loathe them the BNP are a perfectly legal organisation. What would have happened if this chap, who was merely paying respects to his mother, had actually been a member of the BNP? It appears that this 'loose canon' would then have refused him entry into the Church, thereby setting a very dangerous precedent. This incompetent buffoon should be fired forthwith.

Suspicious looking man is searched by police and then goes about his business. Not much of a story here is there! It happens everyday, though normally its a young black or asian man that is stopped and searched for being suspicious looking.

Given the rise of the right wing and their National Socialist agenda in E. Lancs and the denial of the full horror of the holocaust by many BNP followers I think the Cathedral were correct in voicing their concerns.

Hi All.

This is certainly a strange day for seeing just that little ,more clearly...
Must be the fact we are about to pass the Solstice.

When I supported the congregation of St Johns Church Accrington, which also houses the chapel for the Accrington Pals, I discovered the Bishop of Blackburn was not only decieving the congregation in his attempt to 'throw out the faithfull', I was also informed of his ties to the Golden Dawn, which equates to the Rosecrucian's.

To think they would refuse entry to this poor chap is stretching it quite a lot...

To the lucky fellow refused entry...You probably had too much decency about you to enter their planning for their next congregation removal!

Prejudice is prejudice. These people who are so called tollerant people are only tollerant of the people who agree with what they believe. Hypocrisy and ignorance is rife.
Whilst it is true that not all men with beards are terrorists, it just so happens that this is the guise these cowards choose to hide behind, so it makes sense to target people who look that way as a security threat and allow their innocence to prevail. If they have nothing to hide then they have nothing to complain about. If someone fitting my discription had comitted a crime, I would have no problem being stopped and questioned because I know I'd have nothing to hide. I have attended many services at the cathedral and will do so in the future if my appearance and political beliefs are not a barrier. I really hope that the action taken by Mr Chivers is looked at by the church and this kind of sectarianism is not allowed to carry on, Gods church is open to all, not just the chosen few decided by an individual who has no right to judge but is appointed to treat all as gods children. Well put holsten, I live in Blackburn and see non white, not english people walking out of the train station every time I pass (carrying rucksacks and or bags). To cross the road outside they have to
1: walk within 20 YARDS of the police station.
2: Are walking in the direction of the Cathedral.
3: Are in view of the CCTV cameras.

Nowhere in the article above does it mention that this presumed Terrorist was apprehended before he committed his intended crime. maybe he tunnelled in, maybe he paraglided the night before and used his training to abseile down and sneak in dressed as an old lady with his rucksack concealed in a shopping trolley
Lets get things into perspective, the church of ENGLAND has sold out and is greasing the wheels for the government and are prepared to sacrifice their own flock. Whilst our soldiers are fighting a war in afghanistan that doesn't concern this country, our church's are being converted into mosques for them to come home to. I hope they are welcome in the cathedral, or will they be barred because they are BRITISH with short hair and heaven forbid carrying a RUCKSACK and surely soldiers dont't have tattoos so they will e o.k on that front

What a crass comment. This shows what I am saying. Jean Charles de menez ran because he had a hidden agenda. His visa had expired and he was living here illegally. Had he been above board and on the level, carrying an I.D. card he would simply have held his hands up, handed over his I.D and then been on his way. So maybe an I.D wouldn't have stopped what happened, but maybe if there had been an active I.D system in operation this guy wouldn't have attempted to stay in the country illegally in the first place. If it wasn't so easy for these people to just dissappear into the background and become invisible then we wouldn't be over run with illegal immigrants.

There are other legitimate reasons for an I.D system in this country. I have first hand knowledge of massive benefit fraud by taxi drivers and shop owners from a certain race. The fact is that the majority of false information given to the police is by members of this very same race. In fact it is common practice for these people to use several different names. This is why we need an I.D system in this country. Not to mention a total revamp of the immigration system so that we can reduce numbers to a level where the country isn't sinking in so many different ways.

On the basis that you cannot be a priest and a member of the BNP it is logical that being a member of the BNP and true Christian believer is incompatible. Obviously you can be a member of the BNP and go to Church but you are just going through the motions and not the beliefs.

Tattoed man (who isn't a regular member of congregation)with shaven head and rucksack is asked to leave the Cathedral (conducting a live broadcast that has previously been targeted by BNP/Holocaust deniers). Thats enough reasonable suspicion for me!

Police search his bag, nothing to find = nothing for him to worry about and off everyone goies to enjoy the rest of the day. If he had wanted to go back in i am sure he would have been allowed to.

I am still suspicious about his behaviour and reason for attending at the Cathedral, there is more to this than meets the eye!

You need not fear 'terrorists' as the world's destructive seeds are and have been sown by the very people we all thought were against any kind of stereotyping, bigotry and racism - the church!

Wake up everyone. This sort of thing happened not so long ago in the UK's history when people were labelled, branded and burned at the stake for having 'differences'. And guess who by?

The church! Nice to see that thinking is creeping back into it's now very much closed doors.

So you need not bother about world terrorism when the church does a very good job of promoting it itself!

When can we have REAL people holding religious office who actually STAND for what they 'believe' in?

If anyone wishes to decry what I say above - look at your history books where religion has been allowed to control the masses with fear, terror and bigotry. The very same as horrifyingly depicted in this report. Would they also have thrown out Jesus if he'd turned up bald, wearing different clothing? Funny thing is, Jesus was born an ordinary man, not a king, because of this very reason.

Where on Earth did C of E sway so far off it's teachings. No wonder I ditched the church years ago. Because I saw this kind of thing going on.
