‘ENOUGH is enough’ — that’s the message from councillors and residents after a water leak near Darwen Health Centre turned the area into an ‘ice rink’.

A burst pipe from an unoccupied house has again been leaking water down James Street West and Reservoir Street.

United Utilities said its staff fixed the pipe a year ago and charged the owner of the house for the repair, and that the current problem must be a new leak.

But residents and councillors said the issue should have been resolved by now.

Christine Grogan who works at the Health Centre said: “Once again the road is like an ice rink.

“This is the second winter and it’s treacherous.

“There are so many elderly people who come to the health centre, I worry about them slipping.

“United Utilities keep promising to do something, and it’s about time they did.”

Coun Dave Hollings said: “This should have been resolved by now.

“The council and United Utilities have had it reported to them on numerous occasions and playing pass the parcel.

“It is a very busy corner and with ice is potential very dangerous.”

Sue Shakleton, of Reservoir Street, added: “You see kiddies going over on it and cars skidding about. It’s ludicrous.”

Peter Hunt, director of regeneration and environment at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: "The original leak was repaired last year. This is believed to be a new leak and United Utilities are dealing with the issue."

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “Following residents’ concerns, we will be sending out an engineer to see if there is a new leak. We are liaising with the council and we will take appropriate action.”
