A mobile phone mast is to be built despite almost 650 letters of objection from residents.
The 15-metre high timber-clad column with two antennas and two dishes mounted on it, will be sited off High Barn Lane, Whitworth, 500 yards from St Anselm’s School.
Residents, who objected on the grounds of radiation risks, the mast being an eyesore and a lack of “proper” public consultation, are furious with the decision but have no right to appeal.
d Rossendale Council was not in a position to refuse the development on health grounds and had to look at visual and siting aspects only.
Gary Lanahan from Orange, said: ““The mast will not be visible from the majority of buildings in the town; those who will see it will see it from a distance and their views will not be drastically affected.”
Objector, Dr Sandra Hesten said: “This is a visual intrusion on landscape equivalent to green belt.
"It is deeply unpopular amongst the local population and beyond.”
