Foreign students to visit Pendle

A DOZEN students from China, Hungary, Turkey and Germany are due to arrive in Pendle for the twelfth annual international youth seminar.

The students, aged between 18 and 22, will arrive in the area on Sunday and will be greeted by the Mayor of Pendle, Coun Shelagh Derwent, at a reception at the Pendle Inn, Barley.

Pendle hosted the first international youth seminar in 1996 and last hosted it in 2001.

This year’s seminar is based at Whitehough Outdoor Education Centre in Barley and will be led by two trainee teachers from Germany.

The foreign visitors will be joined by three students from Nelson and Colne College, including Adam McWhinnie from Barrowford, Aimee Robinson from Earby and Olivia Nicholson from Foulridge.

Adam, said: “I look forward to the seminar as it provides an opportunity for us to showcase Pendle on the international stage.

“Also it will allow me and the other participants to gain a wider understanding of the other countries involved in an effort to forge new ties and friendships for the future.”

As part of the seminar programme the students will visit some of Pendle’s tourist attractions.

Coun Derwent, said: “For us, it’s an opportunity to showcase our beautiful borough and surrounding areas.

“Of course, no visit to the area would be complete without a walk up Pendle Hill.”
