A YOB who attacked police officers also broke into a van said to contain £600 in a first aid box but claimed he never saw the cash.

Burnley magistrates heard how drunken drug addict Jeffrey Graham, 31, left the two officers injured after they turned up to reports of trouble at Colne market.

He punched one officer in the face twice, bit a second officer on the thigh and ended up being CS gassed.

Graham, who has 19 previous convictions, was said to have turned to drink and drugs because of seeing domestic violence when he was young.

The defendant, of Chapel Street, Colne, admitted two counts of police assault, being drunk and disorderly and theft from a vehicle.

He was given 120 days in custody, suspended for 12 months, with a nine month community order and a drug rehabilitation requirement. He must pay £375 compensation.

John Rusius, defending, said Graham turned to crime when the mother of his child went to Germany and took their son with her.

She had come back to Colne and Graham had not been able to see the child.
