A NEW £1m project to get people more active in Hyndburn has been launched.

The four-year project led by transport charity Sustrans in partnership with local charity Cycling Projects aims to encourage people to walk and cycle more to help combat health problems, including obesity and depression.

The scheme has been funded by the Big Lottery Fund, Cycling Projects, East Lancashire Primary Care Trust, Lancashire County Council, Sure Start and the Plunkett Foundation.

Nichola Honey, project coordinator for Hyndburn Generation Active, said: “This project has the potential to improve the lives of so many people across the borough.

“It will be great to see the enjoyment people get from discovering how easy it can be to get about on foot or by bike.”

Hyndburn Generation Active will reach out to socially excluded inactive people, particularly those aged 16 to 25, by working with local community groups.

Other activities will include cycle rides and walks, and a bike recycling scheme .
