A PREGNANT teenager who admitted arming herself with a knife to intimidate others has vowed to change her ways after being spared jail.

Bobbie-Jo Martin, 18, said she regretted taking the small kitchen knife out with her into Clitheroe town centre.

And her mother said she had been left terrified after discovering that her daughter had carried the weapon.

The incident follows a spate of knife crime in London which contributed to the killing of 19 teenagers in the capial this year.

Conservative MPs have called for mandatory jail sentences for anyone convicted of carrying a knife.

And a review of the way knife crime is handled by the court has been launched by Blackburn MP and Justice Secretary Jack Straw.

Figures released last November put Lancashire in the country’s top 10 ‘hotspots’ for knife crime after 102 attacks in three months.

Speaking from her home yesterday Martin, who lives with her mother Patricia, 48, boyfriend Simon Hartley, 23, brother Darren, 17 and sister, Georgina, 16, said she was sorry for carrying a knife.

She said: “I wasn’t even thinking straight and I had had a lot to drink. I’ve been involved in fights before but never carried a knife.

“I just wanted to scare “Everything will change now. I have found out that I am pregnant and I have stopped drinking and smoking.

“It’s not just as a result of what has happened at court but I know that the kid comes first.

“There are a lot of things on the television and newspapers about knife crime and I know how serious it is. I won’t be doing it again.”

Blackburn magistrates heard that Martin, a former trainee hairdresser, of Turner Street, Clitheroe, went home to get the weapon after a row with a man in a bar.

When she was arrested she told officers if she had seen the man she would have “stuck it in him.”

But magistrates pulled back from an immediate custodial sentence - despite recognising that Martin had a ‘propensity to be volatile’ and that she had an ‘appalling’ record for an 18-year-old.

Magistrates stressed that the fact Martin was 10-weeks pregnant had not influenced their decision not to send her to prison.

The former Ribblesdale High School pupil pleaded guilty to possessing a kitchen knife in Market Place after an incident late on Saturday night.

She was sentenced to 120 days in prison suspended for two years, made subject to community supervision for two years with a condition she attends the Think First programme and ordered to pay £60 costs.

Mum Patricia said the incident had left her “terrified”.

She said: “It’s not only the thought that she was carrying a knife. Who knows what could have happened. Someone could even have used the knife on her. It is not nice and I do worry.”

At court Charlotte Crane, prosecuting, said an officer was arresting a man in Market Place and Martin was shouting abuse at him, telling him to let the man go.

Martin was arrested and produced a wooden handled knife from the waistband of her trousers and said the officers “might as well have this.”

She told police she and her boyfriend had been thrown out of a pub after a row with another man who had spat at her.

Ben Leech, defending, said his client accepted the seriousness of the offence, especially in view of the current, high profile debate on knife crime.

He said: “Despite what she said to the police she was very unlikely to use the weapon, “It would have been used as a deterrent but thankfully even that situation did not arise.”

Following widespread concern over a series of fatal stabbings, Mr Straw said a broad review of the law would take place but he stopped short of ordering a re-think of the sentencing guidelines.

”Overall there are cases where fines would be appropriate, and there are cases where community sentences would be appropriate,” Mr Straw’s official spokesman said.

”There are also cases where custody would be appropriate. It’s important that there is a rounded view on this.”

So what on earth did stop them sending this violent chav to jail? She even admitted making a special trip home to get the knife and that she intended to use it. If this isn't grounds for clink what is! What world do these magistrates live in. Any amount of laws are pointless if a gutless judiciary will not sentence accordingly.
But then in a week when 2 paedophiles, a drug dealer and a man who threatened to kill a police officer (all reported in the LT) were told they needn't go to jail, maybe we shouldn't be surprised. The message seems to be that East Lancs is a safe haven for thugs, knife-weilding chavs, drug-dealers and paedophiles.

Eckythump wants to know what sort of world magistrates live in - simple answer - it's called the real world. No one sided reports from press men looking for a good story but pre-sentence reports prepared by experts from within the probation service. No hysteria from news broadcasts and politicians determined to increase their profile but studied decision making after consultation with legal experts. The defence case was barely mentioned in that report but many circumstances led to the final decision being made. If you read the article again you will see the words 'suspended sentence' - one more mistake or misdemeanor from the defendant and she is going to the prison term that you so obviously desire - this was a one off incident, not the gang culture which is where most of the serious offences are taking place. The decision was made by a group of qualified individuals from within the probation and legal service. I was in the courtroom for this case and the outcome was correct - go and look up the articles on prison overcrowding and the cost of keeping prisoners in custody. This young person has been given a chance - she will be attending training courses to improve her attitude not mixing with other violent criminals in a prison. The persons on the magistrates bench are giving up their own time for no cost to keep this country up to the standards that we expect - if you think you can do better - try it!

This would be the same legal and probation service that manage to keep local paedophiles, drug- dealers and thugs out of jail in recent weeks.
Good to see that we are now apparently allowed one free knife crime before anything happens to us. Can we extend this principle to speeding offences or failure to pay our council tax?

pd,bb nees to get real.I know many criminals who have numerous suspended sentences running concurrently, they reoffend and still dont get sent to prison. The top and bottom of this case is that this girl is a disgrace.Pregnant teen, carrying a knife, drunk and getting involved in incidents of this nature that dont even involve her. Bet your unborn child will be really proud of your previous fighting experience. No doubt your child will be a regular visitor to the local custody office and Court in years to come. This girl and her family are the very personification of everything that is wrong with this society we are being made to live in today. Personally I think she should have been sent to prison and had her baby taken off her when she gives birth, what chance does that poor baby have with a mother like that and a father to be who sounds as equally inept and yobish. Its a pity conceiving a baby isnt more difficult, these people wouldnt be able to work out how to do it then. We all make mistakes in life, this girl has made to many and should be made to learn the hard way.
Its to easy in this nanny socialist state whereby we make exscuses for these idiots and carry on paying out for them to sit at home on their backsides whilst the rest of us go out to work.
Your a disgrace !

Eckythump and Trickster are a classic example of what is wrong with society - bigoted, biased and narrow minded - You want babies snatched from their mother!! What century do you live in - People like myself who work in the legal system know that every case is dealt with "on it's own merit" not by narrow minded attitudes. You seem to have missed the item in my comments that I was in court that day, I heard everything not a selective report from a reporter looking for a good story - I saw those same magistrates send a man to Crown Court last week for the same offence because they could only give him six months inside and it wasn't enough. Just keep your drivel to yourself and leave the law to the experts.

"I saw those same magistrates send a man to Crown Court last week for the same offence because they could only give him six months inside and it wasn't enough."
Same offence, different punishment. Says it all.
As for "Just keep your drivel to yourself and leave the law to the experts." - what monumental arrogance. It's leaving it to the 'experts' that's at the root of the problem. Ivory tower judges and lawyewrs more concerned with makin a buck and manipulating the law rather than justice.
Until the judiciary get more in touch with people's aspirations for justice the declining respect for our legal system will continue.
Wanting to see paedophiles, muggers and knife offenders sent to jail is not bigotted or narrow minded. A pity those of you sitting cozily inside the failing, self-serving system don't recognise the concerns of the general public.

Well, after reading these comments I know which side i'm coming down on. The bb's of this world have had their chance and failed us all with soft touch sentencing. That's why we now live in a chav heaven. Let's now listen more to the likes of eckythump and trickster and less from the cloud cuckoo land living likes of bb.

pd,bb your so out of touch. I to work in the legal profession and have done for 14 years, i could name dozens of criminals given suspended sentence after suspended sentence. It astounds and frightens me when I hear views such as yours. You are the very reason why this country is in the state it is. 5 serious stabbings in london alone in the last 24 hrs- argue with that fact.
get down from your ivory tower and live in the real world before its to late for the rest of us law abiding people who just want to get on in life. we dont want teenagers running round with knives, sorry pregnant teenager oh sorry make that a pregnant, drunken teenager- a great role model for her unborn child ! Get your facts straight and stop defending these idiots who dont want to work and be decent hard working citizens.
