Delight in Lancashire as badger cull scrapped

A WILDLIFE charity has welcomed a Government announcement that it has abandoned plans to cull badgers in a drive to control tuberculosis (TB) in cattle.

The Lancashire Wildlife Trust said the weight of scientific evidence has shifted towards the view that culling would be an expensive option that would, if anything, lead to the spread of TB.

Anne Selby, chief executive of the trust, said pressure has mounted to dismiss the culling option and clear the way for genuinely effective measures.

She said: “We are relieved and delighted that the door is now open for positive measures to come in.

“We need to help in the efforts to reduce TB in cattle and we look forward to co-operating in our capacity as landowners and protectors of wildlife.”
