A BACUP school is celebrating after being hailed as ‘outstanding’ by government inspectors.

Bacup Thorn Primary School, Cowtoot Lane, received top marks in an Ofsted inspection which found that it was striving to provide ‘the very best education for children’.

Lead inspector Carole Cressey looked at the children’s books and displays and remarked they were doing exceptionally well in English, mathematics and science.

She was especially pleased to see how much their writing had improved.

In her report she wrote: “The moment you walk through the door and receive a warm welcome from staff, you see happy, confident pupils; hear calming music; see excellent displays of high standards of work which reflects how exceptionally well pupils achieve; and watch the school’s television channel which shows the most recent exciting educational visits to enrich learning.

“One of the reasons why your work is so good is because you all seem to know your targets and because you listen carefully when your teachers tell you what you need to do to improve your work.

“You are very sensible, caring and tolerant young people. The headteacher is an outstanding leader with passionate commitment and quiet determination to provide the very best education for pupils.”

Headteacher Alison Edgar, who is currently on maternity leave after giving birth to baby Daniel, but came back for the inspection, was delighted with the report.

Acting headteacher Denise Kelly, said: “It is an excellent report and a tribute to all the hard work of the pupils, staff and parents.

“Every morning before school we have a wake and shake exercises to wake up the kids’ minds - it’s like an exercise to music. I think the inspector was impressed with that.

“In the school’s national tests we were above average and we’re looking forward to this year’s results.”

Chair of governors, Paul Fitton said he was delighted with all the aspects of the report and credited the work of both the headteacher and deputy headteacher.
