Paul Ince is new Blackburn Rovers boss

PAUL Ince has agreed a three-year deal to succeed Mark Hughes as Blackburn Rovers manager.

Former England captain Ince, 40, enjoyed a fine season in charge of MK Dons last season, leading them to the Coca-Cola League Two title and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and has been heavily linked with a move to Ewood Park in recent days.

Ince, who enjoyed an illustrious playing career with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Inter Milan, previously coached Macclesfield, who he saved from relegation from the Football League in 2006-07 but this will be his first management job in the top flight.

Ince's appointment makes him the first black Briton to take charge of a top-flight club in England.

Despite taking a slightly unconventional route into coaching - most players of Ince's pedigree and stature are usually offered a more glamorous job when their playing days are over - he has been a consistently impressive performer in the lower leagues and has attracted plenty of envious glances.

He earned his first manager of the month accolade while with the Silkmen, who were adrift at the bottom of League Two when he arrived only to survive the drop on the last day of the season, before taking the title on three occasions during his stint at stadium:mk.

Derby chairman Adam Pearson appeared to covet the former midfielder's services when Billy Davies left the club last term, while Wigan were also thought to be interested before appointing Steve Bruce.

He was also firmly in the frame for the Leicester job following Ian Holloway's departure but last week moved to distance himself from that job, perhaps mindful of Rovers' interest.

Very pleased. I think he's the right choice. Probably the outstanding up and coming English manager, very competitive, shown his willingness to learn his trade lower down the Leagues.

Success is never guaranteed, but Ince knows all about winning football matches at the top level, and has shown he has managerial abilities.

I'm delighted.

well done jw

there's been lots of talk on these pages in the last 3 weeks. some upbeat some down. I trust jw to have got it right for the club. I have no doubt that this will be a toughie this year...with facing coming and going in the next few weeks. from my point of view ... if they don't want to wear the red rose then clear off and cash in. lets hope ince can hit the ground running and with the help of friedel and the likes settle the dressing room quickly.

Fantastic appointment, of course its a gamble, but so was Mark Hughes. The ones that doubt his appointment i can understand but in truth all fans want a big name in management to manage there club.

Give him his chance instead of slating him

Absolutely chuffed to bits.

Rovers should be applauded for this appointment, whether it's successful or not. Not many Premiership clubs have the balls to give a young English manager a chance, who has plied their trade in the lower divisions. I can't think of one at present (I'm sure there must be at least one !!!).

I for one, am proud to support our club.

Roll on next season.

What kind of a statement is that?? We're not there just to make up the numbers you know. I am sorry but we have traded in Mark Hughes and his entire backroom staff for Paul Ince, Ray Matthias and poss a couple of million quid.

I don't love the club any less but I have serious reservations about firstly Hughes et al going for just £5M and of the new appointment.

Laudrup/John Jenson or Ince/Ray Matthias??

I hope I'm proved wrong.

I was really annoyed and upset at the time and I believe it really shows what Ince thinks of Blackburn Rovers.. Big Sam wouldn't have done that!! I think we will regret this because he will leave us at the end of this season.

The next couple of weeks will give us all a good idea of what to expect for the next three years.

Where have i mentioned the word "inexperienced". I'm pretty certain i haven't. But if you want to use that word, was Hughes "experienced" when he came. No he wasn't. Was he successful ?. Yes he was.

Without wishing to get into a debate about whether English coaches have been give a fair crack at managing in the Premier League in recent years, i think it is fair to say that they haven't.

That is why i say that Rovers should be applauded. As to your question "Why should they ?".

The answer is pretty simple. We are an English team. playing in the English Premier League, with an English manager. Ince's appointment is a forward thinking move by a forward thinking club and if you think that his appointment is "ridiculous", then you should be ashamed of yourself.

Adam, in fairness I am a very positive person and in my opinion a positive appointment would have been Laudrup. That would have spelt out our intent and so what if he had just used us as a stepping stone (compensation would have covered his wages).

You get the chance to employ someone of Laudrup's and John Jenson's stature and instead go for a management team who have not managed in the Championship let alone the Premier League.

I like JW and feel he's done a decent job. I do feel, however, that we should have demanded more compensation for MH and his team plus we should have gone for an appointment that would have brought excitement and boosted season ticket sales.

As for Kenny Dalglish it was quite the opposite. I remember where I was when I saw the massive headline on the back of the News of the World and the excitement it generated. I wanted to feel the same way this time but unfortunately it wasn't to be. Laudrup would have been a massive coup and wouldn't have cost us any compensation either. I cannot understand it but I hope I'm wrong.

Lets see how Ince gets on.
Tactically i think he will struggle as with a new back rom team needed and also players that will be coming and going, i think he wont have enough time to prepare.
We will go into a season of "experimenting" due to Inces lack of top level managing experience.
I saw Ince at Stanley last tear and he was far from a Prmiership manager in terms of composure, presence and professionalism.
He'l be another Gary Megson without the experience.
DISASTER FOR ROVERS.
Saying that though he will be on less money than any of the other candidates!
The future is grim.

Congratulations to John Williams and Rovers. Not only on the appointment itself but the polite, honest and discreet way they went about the process. All the problems were taken up with the people concerned and solved before the appointment was made. The right and proper way to do things. I am sure Ince will make an excellent manager and take us - to quote Mark Hughes - on to the next level. Lets hope some of thoses players who are thought to be about to ask to leave give this excellent young Manager a chance to build on the strong foundations that are in place at Rovers. It is conventional wisdom that no 'ordinery club' in the prem. league can get anywhere without untold money. Lets see if we can prove them wrong. The present team is not far away from being able to cause an upset to the big money teams. Bring it on. The start of the season cannot come soon enough.

Daniel, Spain says...
5:28pm Sun 22 Jun 08

Well, i can understand why Williams opted for Ince over Laudrup (because Laudrup could and probably would have been off to someone bigger in a year or so) Where-as Ince stated his desire to be here for 3 or 4 seasons to build something. Laudrup wanted clauses saying he could leave if a big club came in for him.

Having said that, my order preference would have been for either Slavan Bilic or Laudrup
ahead of Ince, so i've got my third choice.

On the plus side, it could have been MUCH MUCH worse (Allardyce, McClaren, OWEN COYLE ) LOL

So while i can't say i'm jumping for joy over this appointment, i'm willing to give my full backing and support to Paul Ince (as long as he doesn't bring in Andrews from MK Dons for 2M!!)

Im gutted we have got "arrogant" Ince!
He has had a good season in a poor league with plenty of cash.
This will all go pear shaped and is a massive backward step for Blackburn.

Adam, Blackburn says...

During the interviews JW may not have felt that Laudrup was fully interested or committed to the job of managing the rovers, so let's please put the debate of Ince vs Laudrup into context. I don't think it was a straight forward decision for JW of "pick one of the two of them" as they both have exactly the same goals, beliefs and desires, ambitions and importantly demands. Negotiations of this magnitude are never so simple.

We now have Paul Ince as a gaffer and we need to get behind him and fill the stands.

Let's give another reason for the players to stay by giving them the opportunity to play in front of a full or a nearly full stadium every week like many of our mid table rivals do and where some of our players want to go to. (spurs, west ham, villa, city etc)

I will be at Ewood next season cheering Ince and Lads on and holding back my small reservations in the hope of some positive results / fans opinions / national press / and chants...

We can encourage this with our actions and that starts with being positive inside the ground.

Come on Rovers fans...

A sensible choice given that he ticks many of the same boxes as Mark Hughes. Incidentally, for those talking about Laudrup, it was suggested in the Daily Telegraph that he had been put off because of the lack of a sizable transfer budget, which would seem fair enough. Ince didn't quite perform the miracles at MK Dons that some would have us believe.

He was appointed manager of MK Dons in June 2007, after they had finish fourth in League Two but narrowly missed out on promotion in the play-offs.

He therefore inherited a decent squad with money to burn.

You could argue that Ian Dowie (in contention for the Rovers job last time) performed a bigger miracle at Crystal Palace - and look what happened there.

As to Ince, he really WANTED IT, has shown he's not frightened of getting hss hands dirty in the bottom leagues - coud you see Shearer doing that - and what Rovers player wont respect a guy who's captained England, played and won trophies for Milan, MUFC, Liverpool etc.

When Ince was appointed manager of Macclesfield Town FC he quickly brought in Ray Matthias as his number 2 claiming that he (Paul Ince) had no idea of what League 2 football was all about and no idea about players at that level. Ray Matthias was Ince's League 2 expert - hence he was made his right hand man. Therefore, by Ince's own admission, if Matthias is an expert on League 2 football, how on earth is he going to coach Premiership footballlers? What is Matthias's pedigree? He had a bit of time at Tranmere and Chester - hardly great grounding to take over at a Premier League top 10 club is it?! I worry about this appointment. Ince will need a top backroom team. If Ince is bringing Matthias with him, I worry about our future.

Well done John Williams,an excellent appointment and a future England manager in Paul Ince.

Paul Ince knows, due to his extensive contacts in the game, that he is coming to a small, but exceedingly well-run football club. One that punches well above it's weight and exceeds all expectations in the modern football world.

He will be given the room and opportunity to coach and manage at the highest level.

Let's hope he takes us up to the next level and from there he can launch his career still further.

C'mon you BLUES!

As to Ince, he really WANTED IT, has shown he's not frightened of getting hss hands dirty in the bottom leagues - coud you see Shearer doing that - and what Rovers player wont respect a guy who's captained England, played and won trophies for Milan, MUFC, Liverpool etc.

Get real - this is a great appointment. An articulate, young, ambitious and hungry manager.

Some risk but ANY APPOINTMENT is a risk.

When Ince took over Mk dons lost both their top goalscorers, so to go on with limited funds, and do a double, and take the extra steps to win the league was very impressive.

Not to mention the fact he kept Macclesfield up, at 12 points adrift. How can u say that was not a miricle?

Personally im excited by the appointment. he is a great young manager, and the knowledge he and Mathias have of the lower leagues could help us bring in some exciting young talent.

He is a natural born winner & leader, and his stature will knock the likes of Bentley down a pegg or 2.

My main worry is that ince, could be off to bigger things in a couple of seasons, & he could use us,
as a stepping stone, just like Hughes did.

Put it this way, if we were the 7th placed team in Spain, Italy or Germany's top league and we appointed a guy that's enjoyed serious success at ManUre, Scouse, Inter and national level, we'd be made up. Is it cos we're so familiar with the English leagues that there's all this apprehension? Get behind him! Hughes left a great foundation for him to work on so as a minimum, we should be expecting to push for Europe and the Cups again this season. And after the media jokers reckoning our players about to jump ship, lets see the Guvnor restore the order of supremecy and pursue some decent players to improve our 1st XI.

Crucial, crucial & crucial that the backroom staff are of the highest quality in this our modern game. We as a Premier club have no excuse what so ever not to use all modern concepts available esp for fitness, diets & rest. I hope that is the case?

David Moyes came from nowhere(before Preston) so if your good at what you do & the players enjoy whats given to them for training then a name means nothing. Ray Matthias,if he is the guy with Ince, will most certainly be put to the test now?

We have to believe that JW & the board have made the best choice in P.Ince. I personally feel Ince will make a fist off it. He his a born winner & that, believe me, does rub off on those around you. This is a massive step for Ince & I do not for a moment think that Ince would have taken up such a task if HE didn't feel HE was ready for the task ahead. Admittedly Ince will most certainly have to hit the ground running, because as we all know, the Prem league is merciless & unforgiving.

Bring it on & lets watch our club push the boundry's -again & again & again & again & again............

Oh dear ..

Its a shockingly BAD appointment.

Rovers are indeed at risk of meltdown now (as most of the first team queue up to leave and will not really be persuaded otherwise now we know who the new boss is)

The only chance of saving the sinking ship was to appoint Big Sam who I do agree may well have played ugly football but who was proven to build teams that punched above their weight on a limited budget. And we surely have the smnallest budget in the whole premiership so that would have been a major criteria for the new boss.

And Yes I would prefer to watch ugly football if it meant a guarantted stay in the premiership as opposed to being the dead certs we now appear to be for relegation (I fear we are like charlton who punched above their weight for so long but who dropped like a brick as soon as curbishley went)

The Rovers Board have fallen for the hype and newspaper talk that pushed for Ince (a man who I fear is nowhere near as a good a manager as the publicity would have us believe)

I hope to be proved wrong , but I am a realist ...

good luck Incey you're going to need it lad !

SMILE YOU’VE BEEN DINGLED

A couple of days after Hughes defected to a better, richer club, a cabal of Burnley supporters well-versed in the arts of black propaganda, gathered in a sparsely decorated room deep in the bowels of the Bee Hive End. Our secret mission was simple: to develop a strategy to disrupt our enemies search for a competent, experienced manager and to install our own favoured Manchurian Candidate.

Through our contacts at the marvelous Daily Mirror we quickly got hold of the six names on the shortlist. We immediately wrote off Laudrup, Shearer and Advocaat as being far too expensive for our impoverished neighbours, leaving only McClown, BFS and our Manchurian Candidate, the claret and blue born Ince. We credited the dimwitted Sadburn board with having just enough sense not to appoint McClown leaving only BFS in our way.

BFS’s candidacy represented a real problem for us as here was a manager with proven ability of successfully managing impoverished clubs in the EPL, surely the board would appoint him we argued. We therefore set about destroying his reputation by setting up an Anti-BFS Facebook petition and getting our fellow Burnley supporters to sign it. Additionally, we voted en masse for our Manchurian Candidate Ince on the online polls and talked up his very limited experience and ability on your forums.

You can imagine our glee when JW and his dumb board fell for this spurious ‘fan power’ hook, line and sinker. Enjoy your last season in the EPL as you’re on a downward slide that will eventually dump you in League 2 – exactly where a club of your miniscule stature belongs.

Given the choice between Laudrup and Ince, I would take Ince any day. And I say that even though I'm Danish and a Rovers supporter for more than 15 years. Let's review why it's great that it's not Laudrup, we now have in the management hotseat:

(1) Laudrup would come with a clause basically allowing him to leave if a better offer came in. How's that for motivating players to come to the club let alone stay if you know the gaffer has one foot out the door the minut he walks in.

(2) Laudrup has no real toplevel experience in the transfer market. Yes, he was a worldclass player and is sorely missed in the Danish national side, but he has never acted in the transfer market in a big way. He brought a lot of players to Brondby, when he was there, and they are still struggling to offload some of them. In Getafe he basically inherited a team brought together by an all-controlling club president (alhtough admittedly he did perform wonders with that).

(3) Laudrup is rumoured not to be much of a man manager. In the Brondby days it was rumoured that he only seldom was active at the training pitch with John Jensen doing that.

(4) Laudrup has a loose-canon agent, who is not affraid to comment on players of the team, Laudrup manages, in the media. Think about how unsettling that would be.

With all this I'm not saying that Ince is my number one choice. But I'm saying that I'm not so sure we should be sorry not to have gotten Laudrup. We need someone committed, and if Ince is that, can install that in the players and pull off a few coups in the transfer market, I'm all for him, and I believe Rovers have a great future ahead of them.

Dingle Den....Absolutely brilliant mate. One of the best posts I have read. I don't suppose our friends down the M65 will appreciate it's full value as the phrases have quite a few words with more than two sylables.

He is English, served in the lower leagues and did well, but most of all HE WNTED THE MANAGERS JOB.And in my estimations if you want a job you will suceed at it,you will enjoy it and your life will revolve around it.You are likely to be more sucessful in enjoying a job you like ,so lets get right behind him and see the results.

With the fact no one wants to join Burnley, and everyone wants to leave, u will struggle to get 11 out on the pitch.

HE-HE doesn't get much better than OWEN COYLES appointment though does it !!

As always 'A DINGLE-DUM' raising awareness of just how ridiculously deluded they are. Of course they hold much sway in the world of football, even helping a board of directors choose the next manager for a football club through it's posturing, which if one looks at the hard facts, highlights just why BFC are in exactly the predicament it finds itself in. FAN POWER of disastrous proportions leading to disarray amongst it's past & present owners.

Appoints manager(s) with no proven quality's. On the other hand it's near rivals appoints a young English manager who as won various trophys through his playing days, with arguably some of the biggest clubs in the world. Captained his country on numerous occasions on the world stage. The list is endless.

Who then goes on to manage at the lowest possible point(Maccesfield) turning around the fortunes of that club thus staving off relegation & most certainly reversing, quite possibly extinction. All in a season. With that job accomplished he then moves on to MK Dons were upon he delights many a respected manager with his DESIRE & DEDICATION to win, playing some very attractive football along the way,but always always to win thus resulting in winning the league outright & a cup for good measure. Again all in a season(or two?)
Winning is an infectious trait & no matter were it maybe won, winning is winning is winning!!

So I would personally like to thank the DIM-DUM-WITTED BFC supporters for what will most certainly prove to be a winning manager at BRFC(Again) & if this highly successful manager decides to move on in the coming years to bigger & better things then I will be rightly proud of what BRFC contributes to football -SUCCESS through it's motto:

Arte et labore

PS No doubt B.Flood will now be buying Mrs.Flood a new diamond seeing as you have just bought a new player(by all accounts)

Lets get something straight here - Rovers to be relegated from PREMIER LEAGUE 12-1 (10th Fav), Dingles to be relegated from FIZZY POP LEAGUE 4-1 (4th Fav). The fact that the inbreds spend most of their time having a go at Rovers seems to me that they are trying to cover up the fact they will, more likely than not, be playing League 1 football very shortly. Thats not just my opinion, ask the bookies, they make a living out of predicting this stuff.

For the record - Rovers rejected Laudrup because of the clauses he wanted in his contract not because, as some of our deluded friends think, he was too expensive.

Ince has more league managerial experience than Hughes and that appointment didn't turn out too bad did it?

And next time anyone needs a laugh just remember that little farce of a club called Burnley. It's no surprise they're so cold having to live in our shadow for so long.

We need to get behind ince. Maybe Laudrup would have been more apealing but it he clearly has some worries. for exmaple he left the spanish club after just one year due to limited finance. Surely this would happen at Rovers too. Secondly he wants a clause so if a better club comes he can go. The name Bellamy is ringing in my ear. So why would you appoint some one who would always be half way out of the door and has a history of just leaving when he wants too. Ince wanted a team with a plan, and not many managers would cut there teeth in the lower end of football. IT also states INce is going to bring in an experienced coach who has worked in the prem. I cant imagine not many people had heard of bowen before he came here. So have some faith and get behind INCE he wanted the job and JW would have thought hard about ince and laudroup and only he knows all the ins and outs, and im sure he thinks Ince will be more stable and actually want to stay. Laudroup would always be looking over his shoulder at pastures new ! Support Ince

I think there's a worrying undercurrent to the Laudrup link; some fell for his agent's tricks at the expense & compromised their objectivity & trust in John Williams & the Rovers board. By believing Laudrup was a viable option, it created a concept that if Ince was selected it would be an anticlimax - majority of posts in here since Thursday proved that. I guess we need to ask ourselves how the Laudrup link broke - from Denmark, and his agent. Then ask ourselves why? Well, with the benefit oh hindsight, that now seems obvious - his agent knew he wouldn't be given the job (possibly due to suggested clauses, or a lack of commitment, or otherwise - we probably will never know) and so tried to get public opinion on his side. In reality, he threw his toys out the pram in a way akin to Allardyce. It's telling that last Friday, 3 candidates all chose to break news to the press - Mclown going to Twente, Laudrup's link & Allardyce stamping his feet. It now seems clear why. Whatever anyone else suggests, one thing seems obvious to me - JW has been vindicated in the way they went about their business. Okay, it remains to be seen if Ince will succeed - which is subjective after all - but Allardyce above all justified why he was clearly wrong in every aspect - arrogant, childish, stupid, obnoxious and petulant, so good riddance to bad rubbish.
