Major overhaul of Pendle bus services announced

MAJOR changes are planned this month for bus services in Pendle - with some new services added and other routes axed across the borough.

Last month a number of significant alterations were made to bus services in Burnley - and in March the same will apply to Pendle.

The number 65 Pendleside service, from Nelson to Burnley and running through Fence, Higham and Padiham, will now run hourly, Mondays to Saturdays, to serve the villages and Carr Hall and Lomeshaye, courtesy of Tyrer Buses.

Bus chiefs say there is virtually no custom on the existing Barrowford leg of the service, so a new number 68 service will travel between Nelson and Barrowford instead.

The new Nelson and Barrowford circular will also operate hourly, every day except Sundays, through operator Tyrer Buses.

New proposals have been drawn up for a new 94 and 94A service, which will act as the main subsidised services running from Nelson to Colne.

The county council and Pendle council are combining the former 14 and 15 Colne town services, and the Brierfield-Nelson-Cravendale 98 service to offer a new half-hourly bus, Mondays to Saturdays, which will serve Morrisons, Swinden Hall Road, Regent Street, Boundary Mill, Alkincoats, north west and north east Colne Hourly buses will connect to Brierfield, via Chapel House Road, and the town's Mansfield Crescent estate.

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said: "These services have the advantage of providing a cross-district link between Nelson and Colne, offering a direct link to the employment areas, retail stores and town centres."

In addition there will also be a a new hourly Sunday daytime service - 94S - operating between Colne and Nelson town centres via north west Colne North, Boundary Mill, Regent and Cravendale Avenue.

The 98 service from Nelson to Brierfield, via Cravendale and Chapelhouse will stop from March 17 and the Pendle Wayfarer P1 service, between Nelson, Barley and Blacko, will be axed from March 30, as the Pendle Witch Hopper replaces much of the route.

Other alterations are planned, including axing the 14 and 15 Colne town services from March 17 - these buses will be incorporated into the new 94 and 94A buses.

Tyrer will withdraw the number 60 Colne to Nelson service, via Alkincoates, from March 17, also in favour of the 94 and 94A services.

March will also see a number of changes planned for the Pendle Witch Hopper service, which covers Burnley, Pendle and parts of rural Hyndburn.

The P70 and P71 services will be introduced, offering transport from Nelson to Clitheroe via Blacko, Roughlee, Newchurch, Spen Brook and Barley, and Downham and Chatburn in the Ribble Valley.
