Girl attacked 'for how she dressed'

4:30pm Thursday 10th January 2008

comment Comments (58)   Have your say »

A YOUNG girl was chased and attacked in school grounds - because of how she was dressed, her mother claims.

The 12-year-old, who was wearing "emo" style clothing, with skinny black jeans and a hooded top, was set upon by a gang of girls at 3pm on Sunday.

Her mum said the attack, in Blackburn, could have been much more serious if she had not managed to escape.

Police said they were treating the incident very seriously because of the vicious nature.

However, a spokesman said they were unable to confirm whether the offence was prompted by the girl's appearance as the officer dealing with it was on holiday.

The girl's mum, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, said the gang were calling her daughter, a Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School pupil, a "goth".

She had gone into Blackburn town centre shopping for her mother's birthday present when she was targeted in the Boulevard.

One of the gang shouted 'Are you wearing those shoes for a joke?'

She then ran along Church Street where she was assaulted.

Police said she got to Preston New Road when the gang stopped her again and tried to take her iPod.

The mother said the girl ran to the QEGS school grounds to hide and was running up the steps when her legs were grabbed and she fell.

Her mum, 38, who lives in Feniscowles, said: "They were calling her a goth.

"One had hold of her while others were punching her.

"They made her aplogise for being a goth and were making her beg for them not to 'break her legs'.

"They held her hostage on the steps until she did."

She added: "She was in tears and cried the whole night.

"She has been left completely traumatised by it."

She said the attack was a stark reminder of what happened to Sophie Lancaster, who was allegedly murdered for wearing goth-style clothing in August, The mother said: "We all know what it can lead to after what happened to the girl in Bacup.

"That could have been my daughter and I want to warn all parents."

PC Mick Smith said: "This was an extremely serious incident but fortunately she wasn't physically injured.

"We won't tolerate attacks on anyone, and we are appealing to anyone who might have seen what happened to come forward and let us know."

Police have arrested three girls on suspicion of assault.

The girls, all aged 14 and from Blackburn, have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Blackburn police on 01254 51212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 .

Im afraid Eileen zero tolerance in our justice system is sending thugs such as these on a winter skiing holiday, as they are probably misunderstood and have probably been abused themselves, you get the gist poor little lost sheep who have lost their way in life, to my mind six whacks with the birch would do the trick, it would punish one and detare 10,000

For goodness sakes Batman, are you one of thse people that assumes that all Police Officers are robots who work 24/7 365 days a year? im sure you would be the first to complain if your boss demanded those kind of hours from you. what a stupid comment to make.

I hope the girl recovers from this, This and other attacks are mindless thuggery, from a society that doesnt give a ****, we are supposed to live in culturally aware diverse times, not so. The police are powerless at times, as when these thugs go to court (if their solicitors have not found some stupid technicality to get them off) get into court, then some behind the times judge will let them off with a quick telling off and "well.. you know you've done wrong. dont do it again" society as a whole needs to stand up and shout that the system needs sorting out and fast.

If an officer is going on holiday, the case details should be clearly available to someone else in their absence, not just come to a halt. How amateurish is that? I thought that was why police officers took notes and wrote reports. IT is the police force investigating a case, not an individual.

In reading this article...("They made her aplogise for being a goth and were making her beg for them not to 'break her legs'.

"They held her hostage on the steps until she did.")
...
If you are held against your will 'anywhere' I would class this a being held hostage, if I was made to beg and apologise to someone I would class this as a ransom! So obviously the mother and the police do know the seriousness of this situation. What I would be more worried about is, how many where in the gang? where are the other members? why was there only three arrested? Harsher punishments would not go amiss.

The girl has had to 'escape' from this gang as they held her hostage and she was made to beg. campaign which was established after the horrific death of Sophie only a few months ago.

I am angry and saddened to see that attacks are still happening to people singled out for the way they dress.

I have been in contact with the family and will meet with them soon. We have to support each other and demonstrate that we will not stay quiet about what is regularly happening to our children.

Please go to

www.myspace.com/inme

moryofsophie and add your name to the petition calling for an extension of the hate crime bill to include people attacked for belonging to alternative cultures,eg "goth" "punk" "emo" etc. You can also find out more about the campaign and red for yourself the overwhelming support it has received.

I have arranged a meeting with Sylvia lancaster and Greg Pope MP to discuss this petition and the violence our children face and what the campaign hopes to achieve.

The Police are obviously taking it very seriously and need time to collect all the evidence they require. The Police have been very thorough in Sophie's case and the trial takes place in March.

Our best wishes go out to this family as they come to terms with this nasty incident.

Parents need to listen to their children when they say they have been abused for how they look, it really can be serious as we have discovered yet again.

People today are so stupid, first of all nobody should be attacked for how they dress, second of all 'emo' is of a complete diffrent background to the gothic sub-culture these children are severly stupid and should be locked up. People have the wrong view on sub-cultures today and should do there research before saying or doing stupid things, especially newspapers they have completly destroyed the whole goth thing by asserting it with satanism and marilyn manson, no of them are goth, goth started in the 1980's with siouxie sioux and the cure not the 1990's with manson, people need to realise that music, gender and age have nothing to do with the thoughts in somebodies mind, just because you dress a certain way or listen to a certain music doesnt mean your a satan loving freak like these children think.

I love how people fight fire with fire... As horrific as these attacks are, it shouldn't turn the rest of us into mindless neanderthals who live by the standard "an eye for an eye". Yes, they deserve punishment, but in the form of a prison sentance (and hopefully one that actually goes the distance). As a society we are meant to be civilised. Holly, Manchester says...

My heart goes out to this girl and her family. It takes so much bravery in the first place to go out dressed how you want to be dressed when it's so different from the 'norm'. I've been victimized by strangers for the way I dress since I was about... Ten, and so this girl has my upmost respect. I sincerely hope that after this she still has the courage to go out dressed as herself. I have a little sister the same age as this girl, who sometimes dresses in a sort of gaudy 'emo' fashion, and this story has sunbsequently made me sick to my stomach.

The four thugs who attacked this girl do not deserve to be alive. And the skills of their parents needs to be seriously looked at. Who allows their kids to grow up with prejudice like that? They sicken me, and should be turned into cat food.

As a member of the Goth community in Whitby, North Yorks, can I please send my sincere wishes and thoughts to this poor girl and her family.

Only today were we attending a photoshoot in Whitby about the memorial bench for Sophie Lancaster which was placed thanks to the kind donations of thousands of Goths from around the World.

This young girl must not back down to this kind of behaviour. She has every right to dress how she chooses and no amount of bullying or violence sould stop her.

I have been beaten up and picked on since 1979 when I began to follow the alternative scene. There were no Chavs then, just other nasty people with a different discriptive title.

Should the parents need any help from the Goth community in a positive and constructive manner they can email me, or get in contact with me via Kate and the Sophie campaign.

Firstly, 14 year olds beating up a 12 year old is pathetic. Secondly, that they had to do it in a big gang is childish.

I'm so sorry this happened and I wish the best for the girl who was attacked.

I've been attacked for how I dress - I've been punched and knocked against a wall, I've had handfuls of stones thrown at me.

But I will not let these pillocks win. I have the right to express myself and if that happens to be by how I dress then so be it. I'm not harming anyone by not wearing mainstream fashion. The attacks I faced were over 10 years ago. I'm ok. I survived.

Sadly, I don't know what the answer is. There will always be elements in society who take sick pleasure in attacking people for being 'different' and sadly it's worse when you're a teenager.

But those of us who look different need to be brave - not bowing down to pathetic attacks and showing we're not afraid is the only way to win.

(Amusing anecdote... I was once chased by some chavs. I ran as fast as I could, then looked round... they were so drunk they'd all fallen over! Hahahaha!)

Sarah, Ormskirk says...

If she was in Hull she wouldn't have a chance. Durin university I got beaten up there because of what I wore and the police didn't bother making a proper investigation, despite I was looking at a CCTV camera. In fact it took five phone calls to get their attention. I am sick of this ignorance and hate I mean thankfully where I live people are indefferent to what i wear but why do scallies have a problem? Are they jealous that this girl's parents actually care for her and she will live a better life because she has a personality? One way to solve this is to stop b*ggering about with political correctness and do some harsh punishment, no matter how "offended" criminals feel. That way they will feel more peturbed. Criminals have more rights than we do and they know it, hence why they so freely act upon crime. I really hope this lass recovers because I know how traumatising it is. Even though it was two years ago I'm still iffy about going back to Hull.

I assume you mean “severity” rather than “sincerity“.

A further clarification, Hostage taking is the act of holding some one against their will in order to compel a party (usually, but not always a 3rd party) to engage in or refrain from a specific course of action. Paying a ransom is one example, although in this day and age political hostage taking is far more common than hostage taking for remuneration.

Since this child was held against her will and compelled to take a course of action as a condition of her release (in this instance apologise for her attire), then the use of the term Hostage to describe her is entirely appropriate, at least in the lexicological sense.
