A man has sadly died following a serious crash, which closed a road for several hours.

Police were called at around 2.30pm on Sunday to a two-car smash on Amounderness Way in Poulton-le-Fylde.

A silver Mini Cooper and an Iveco Daily were involved in the crash, which happened at the River Wyre Roundabout.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We were called at 2.30pm on Sunday to a two-vehicle collision at the River Wyre Roundabout, Poulton-le-Fylde involving a silver Mini Cooper and an Iveco Daily.

"The driver of the Mini, a man in his 60s from the Hambleton area, was taken to hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead.

"It appears he may have suffered a medical episode prior to the collision."

On Sunday a statement from Thornton Police said: "We are currently at the scene of a serious collision on Amounderness Way in Thornton.

"The road is closed between Norcross and the River Wyre roundabouts and we are asking motorists to avoid the area and find alternative routes."

Amounderness Way at the River Wyre Roundabout remained closed for several hours with motorists urged to avoid the area while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The road has since reopened.
