Sophie's mum - let's end the conflict

THE mother of tragic teenager Sophie Lancaster has called for an end to the culture of conflict surrounding youngsters who chose to be different.

Sylvia Lancaster said she had to campaign for peace - particularly an end to attacks on alternative groups such as goths, moshers and emos - "to make sense of a senseless act."

How can these attacks be stopped? Add your comments below.

Her daughter was attacked and killed in August - and police believe the assault was because of her alternative style of dress.

The call comes after a row between a shop owner in Blackburn town centre and groups of youngsters he claimed had been intimidating his customers.

And on Saturday night, four 15-year-olds dressed in the "mosher" style - baggy jeans and heavy-metal band T-shirts - were chased and attacked by yobs armed with sticks and bottles in Holcombe Drive, Burnley.

Police said they had been targeted simply because of the way they looked.

Mrs Lancaster, whose campaign SOPHIE (Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere) has received support from all over the world, said she wanted to spread the message of co-operation throughout both adults and young people.

And she called for greater understanding among adults.

Mrs Lancaster said: "I don't understand where on earth this culture has come from where some young people think it's OK to go out at the weekend and beat someone up.

"But that is a small minority - most of them are lovely people and they are the future."

Sophie, 20, of King street, Bacup and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were brutally beaten in Stubbylee Park, Bacup, on August 11.

Robert recovered from the attack, but Sophie died in hospital on August 24.

Five teenagers have since been charged with murder.

Mrs Lancaster said: "The campaign is about trying to get away from blaming people and getting the conversation going between different groups of young people and adults too.

"I want people to think twice about labelling people because of the way they dress or the music they listen to - adults are just as guilty of that as young people and it does create conflict.

"We have a long way to go but we have managed a lot already.

"I was amazed at the response in support of the teenagers in Blackburn, agreeing that they are just ordinary people.

"And I was delighted with how seriously the police and councillors in Burnley have taken the attacks there.

"I know some people might think this campaign is just idealism, but you have to start somewhere.

"Sophie would never have wanted me to be sitting at home grieving and not doing anything because that's not what I am and it's not what she was.

"She was a lovely, kind, caring girl.

"What happened to her was senseless but I have got to make sense of it by doing as much as I can to stop it happening again."

John Wilman, of Pavilion Interiors, sparked a huge response after complaining about the alternative-culture teenagers who gather near his shop, Pavilion Interiors, in Blackburn town centre.

He said he would be willing to meet with representatives of the youths.

He said: "I'm not against kids and I don't think they are all nasty people.

"I understand that they might not feel safe in the parks and that's why they gather in the centre, and I don't know how to get round that.

"The fact is that the town centre is not a playground, but it has been turned into one.

"These kids need somewhere to go where they do feel safe."

Memorial concerts for Sophie have been held all over the country, and campaigners are now investigating ways of bringing their message to schools, workplace, councils and communities.

It is wrong when someone picks on a group just because they seem (look, drress) different.
It is tragic when violence results.
It must be hell on Earth for Sophie's family, and friends.

And yet they try, for what?. To stop it happening again. Their courage must be applauded, and all of us should look after the young people. We must, or we are not human. If I offend anyone, apologies.

"John Wilman, of Pavilion Interiors, sparked a huge response after complaining about the alternative-culture teenagers who gather near his shop"
I seem to remember the huge response was mainly directed towards the LET's 'shonky' reporting of the matter.

I agree with Sophie's mothers comments. There is nothing wrong with Goth's EMOS Punks Mods etc its just young people enjoying what they like they do. Perhaps if the Young People got together they might understand why one like's this and the other one like's that. Fashion is really like going into a restaurant and ordering food some people will like one thing other's will like another.

A line from one of my Favorite all time songs by the Specials called Ghost town. Why must the Youth Fight amongst themselves?

I have a 15 year old daughter and a 14 year old step daughter just because they like dance music which I cannot stand personally worries me they they could become targets just because they like the dance scene. My preference at the age of 45 is either Punk, Punk Ska or Metal.

It is so easy for people to turn around to Sophie's family and friend's and say times a great healer but is it? Personally I do not think so but I hope that it helps them to know a lot of people have them in our thought's.

I know only to well what it is like to be singled out due to the fact I am a Practicing Pagan in a Christian country (I am British ex-pat)and the prejudice that goes with it but that is through mentality of people who think they know but in reality know nothing. I have been called a Devil Worshiper funny thing is though that as a Pagan we do not believe in the Devil it is a Christian invention and Muslim not Pagan.

To all of Sophie's Friends and Family stay strong for each other. And for those people of little knowledge try to learn before you jump to conclusions.

I only hope that the ones who committed this dreadful crime are dealt with in the most harshest way and not allowed to be out in 2 or 3 years time.

Good luck with the campaign, tho I'm afraid these attacks are systematic of a deeper problem within our society.

We now have a significant amount of thugs in this country, both youths and adults, who seems to think they can resort to violence whenever they choose and this is because the sentencing for ABH/GBH is too weak and this gives out the wrong message.

A slap on the wrist for punching someone in the face is not the way forward. In fact, it only leads the perpetrators on to commit more serious assaults which can and do end in the murder of wholly innocent people.

How many times have you read the long list of previous offences for violence when someone is on a murder charge?

the bravery of the SOPHIE campaigners; especially Sophie's family and friends; and the kids who gave their names and address to the paper in an attempt to tell Blackburn shoppers that they're really just like them and not to be afraid is beyond question. And to applauded and supported.
The legal system/process for minors needs to be changed.
The definition of hate crime needs to be expanded to include Alt people. Why? Because intolerance and hatred for those that are 'different' has been instilled somehow into a certain section of society, and from a young age. Because the laws for such crimes as the death of Sophie and the daily attacks of Alt and LBGT kids all over the UK that come to us for advice are NOT sufficient to deter those who willingly break the laws currently in place.
Let's hope that those that took Sophie's life receive appropriate sentencing, and that the necessary changes to the law come very soon.

Thank you Camilla for this very good report, it does demonstate well how the debate has begun on how we as a society tackle the serious problem of discrimination faced by people who follow different cultural ideals.

Having spent a great deal of time supporting Sylvia Lancaster to manage the S.O.P.H.I.E.CAMPAIGN

,
I have been in awe of her strength to be able to do this work so soon after the horrific death of Sophie.

We already have over 450 "friends" on the myspace/inmemoryofso

phie, mostly people who never met Sophies but have been moved so much by her a death. They see themselves or their loved ones in her and many have tales to tell of abuse and attacks to them or theirs.A good deal are from America and Europe but they are all wanting the same thing, an end to the prejudice.

We were very upset last week at the negative reporting of the young people in Blackburn last week and were heartened at the many, many responses received by the LET, overwhelmingly in favour of what we were saying with S.O.P.H.I.E.

We were pleased to see their replies in the subsequent article. It was very positive to hear the Leader of Burnley council say he sees that this prejudice needs tackling starting at home and in schools.

We were very disressed to read about further attacks on the young people in Burnley and hope they are now feeling much better.

Please continue to support S.O.P.H.I.E. by visiting the myspace site or the newly built

inmemoryofsophie.com

where you will find more information about the campaign.

Please also support all the local musicians who are staging concerts in Accington(Adelphi pub 23rd&24th November) and Blackburn(Napier pub 3rd November, followed by the memorial gig in Bacup on the 30th November.

these are all in addition to the Memorial Concert at Rawtenstall on the 25th which is to be attended by Sophie's family and friends.

The theme is "Make a Noise" to demonstrate we will not stay quiet about what has happened.

There are many other events planned worldwide to honour Sophie, but closer to home I want to honour Sylvia and Adam for being the bravest peopleI will ever meet

I regularly talk to Sophies mother and Aunt online and try to show my support as much as i can, there is no easy answer, and in respect to the person who said we should try to get the different groups of youngsters to talk to each other-forget it. In a fairytale world maybe, but not this. I've just got home from Rochdale, and the ammount of evil looks, glares and intimidation aimed at my by local scumbags was unbelievable! Its this"Acting hard", bullying, and being in gangs that is the problem. Each generation of these morons gets younger and younger, i worry for the future of this country until someone is put in charge who actually has the balls to stand up and do something about it rather that rubbish like"Hug a hoody" and talking, these idiots are so uneducated they dont even know how to communicate with those of us who bothered trying at school and all they know is agression.

I just wish the public and authorities realised this before a young life had to be taken. Being alternative to me means observing society from the outset, reflecting on things spast present and future, bing creative. Being who I am and not following comteporary fashions set by main stream media figuresI shouldn't be afriad of doing these things. Its a tragic pity people are afriad of who they could be and who others actually are on the outside that this has to happen.

I admire and applaud all peace campaigns especially when conducted by those who have suffered devastating loss such as Sylvia and her family but unfortunately the likely truth is, that it is unlikely to change the attitude of those who committed this atrocious attack and murder. There are many reports of their families and friends and others of the same fashion still intimidating those who are not like them. The ones whos hearts you touch with your campaigne already know right from wrong. The ones who need to learn seem to have learned nothing. But keep on trying, stay strong, maybe one day...... May Sophie's light shine on for ever. Get well soon Rob.xxx

It is dreadful to see prejudice going so far!
I can't imagine what Sophie's family has gone through but the fact her mother is being so strong and taking a stand for this irrelevance is so amazing as she is taking concern for teens still out there going through these occuring intimidating troubles. When i was younger i know that i and many others had to put up with being targets for such street kids (and this is also for the way i dressed)..i know that i had things thrown in my hair, abusive comments shouted at me, people in general just giving you nasty stares....Sophie must have to have put up with this so much and i admire those that take courage in their individualism and stay happy despite who's out there. I am 17 now and have gone through phases like everyone but this young innocent girl was robbed of her life just for being a certain way and i think most people would agree that teen behaviour in this stereotypical area is outrageous!

God bless Sophie's family for such bravery, praying for you.. you really have come so far x.

After Spo's murder, her mum Sylvia could have, quite understandingly, retreated into a world of self pity and mourning. Instead she, along with friends, set up S.O.P.H.I.E (Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred and Intoloence Everywhere) to ensure that this never happened to another family.

Sylvia's strength in dealing with what happened to Sohie is an insperation and I urge everyone to E.mail the M.P. Janet Anderson to campaign for Sylvia to recieve some form of recognition in the New Years Honours List

She is an amazing woman
