A HOST of Burnley legends dusted off their boots to play in a football match in support of a former team-mate.

Around 700 people descended on Bamber Bridge for a charity match held between Burnley and Swansea on Sunday afternoon.

The football match was organised in a bid to raise vital funds to assist ex-Clarets player Lenny Johnrose, who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in March 2017, a condition which is currently without a cure.

The 48-year-old, who also played for Swansea in his career, received a guard of honour from ex-players, including Brian Jensen, Graham Alexander and Robbie Blake, at the start of the 90 minute match.

The Clarets team was managed by former Burnley boss Stan Ternant.

Johnrose's brother, Francis, played in the match in place of the former defensive midfielder, who was unable to play.

After the match Johnrose thanked the hundreds of people who had turned out to support and tweeted: "Words cannot express how grateful I am. You really are all fantastic."

Swansea ran out 10-7 winners on the day and just under £10,000 was raised towards the Len Johnrose Trust.

Several of the ex-Clarets also donated memorabilia from their playing careers to be auctioned in aid of the Trust.

Veronica Simpson, who is the secretary of Burnley FC's former player's association, said she was 'overwhelmed' by the turnout and thanked sponsors Burnley Supporters Club, Kiko Rodriguez, Nick Preston and Blackston Communications.
