A HEROIN addict attacked her mum when she refused to give her money.

Blackburn magistrates heard Amanda Jane West turned up at her mother’s at 2.30am and started banging on the door.

When her mum refused to give her any money she grabbed her by the hair and punched her in the stomach.

When the older woman fell to the floor she punched her in the face before running off with her handbag.

West, 31, of Bank Hey Lane South, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to assaulting Jean West and stealing £10 from her.

She was made subject to a community order for 12 months with a nine months' drug rehabilitation requirement and 20 days' rehabilitation activity requirement.

She was ordered to pay £60 compensation to her mother.

Imposing sentence the chairman described the incident as “nasty.”

“It was a very significant breach of trust in your mum’s own home and we are particularly concerned about your need for drugs,” he added.

Philippa White, prosecuting, said Mrs West was in bed when her daughter started knocking on the door. She let her in so the neighbours would not be disturbed.

West was demanding money from her mum and at one stage picked up a knife from the kitchen.

“Mrs West was concerned her daughter may self-harm,” said Mrs White.

“She discarded the knife but then attacked her mum, grabbing her by the hair and punching her in the stomach. That caused Mrs West to fall to the floor where she was punched in the face, causing her to bleed.”

West ran from the house with her mum’s bag. When the bag was recovered, £10 had been taken.

The court heard Mrs West had assisted her daughter financially on a number of occasions but had decided enough was enough.

Gareth Price, defending, said his client was in receipt of universal credit but it had been 10 weeks since she received a full payment.

“She was desperate for some financial assistance,” he said.

“She had managed to stay out of trouble for six years prior to this incident and hopefully, with the help of the probation service, she can manage another six years or even longer.”
