HOSPITAL bosses have said a warning urging patients to stay away from A&E for 'less serious concerns' was in response to a 'busy' Saturday.

East Lancashire Hospitals Trust said that A&E visitor numbers were high but no higher than other days.

They said advice published on social media on the weekend was the same as the trust does every few weeks when the emergency department is 'busy'.

It follows a message from the trust on Saturday which asked people to consider using alternatives such as the Minor Injuries Units at Accrington and Rossendale or the Urgent Care Centres at Blackburn and Burnley for less serious concerns.

Tony McDonald, deputy director of operations at the trust, thanked patients who heeded the advice.
