ALL is set for a new one-day music festival which is coming to Clitheroe in October.

The Valley Sounds Festival will feature 16 bands performing on two stage at the Old School Rooms and Assembly Hall, headlined by former Inspiral Carpets frontman Tom Hingley performing with his new band the Kar-pets.

The driving force behind the festival are three businesswomen from Clitheroe, sisters Katie and Samantha Winstanley who run Megabites of Cumbria and Lucy Greenhalgh, owner of clothes shop La Tete et Tout, both based on Moor Lane.

“We’re all just love music but having businesses means we can’t get to festivals like we used to,” said Katie, 33. “We were having a drink one night and just decided it would be good to stage a festival in Clitheroe which was primarily based around indie music and it all sort of developed from there.”

Katie had experience of organising festivals when she lived in Kirkby Stephen in the Lake District.

“We were lucky to have Tom Hingley perform at a couple of the events,” she said, “so I just got in touch with him and he agreed to headline Valley Sounds straight away which was really cool.”

The full line-up for the festival features some well-known names and some up-and-coming acts both from the Ribble Valley and further afield.

These include reggae outfit Jeramiah Ferrari and Ribble Valley based band The Ragamuffins for whom the festival will be their only local date of the year.

“We have had tremendous support in getting contacts for bands and we’re all really excited now about the line-up,” said Katie.

“As much as we can in a day we want the event to have that real festival feel, so we will be dressing the hall and the stages with our festival theme which basically celebrates the countryside.”

Both stages will be indoors with the courtyard at the venue hosting a VIP area.

The festival will have a capacity of 500 and following Tom Hingley and the Kar-pets’ headline slot, there will be an after show party featuring the Supersonic indie night.

“We hope that the festival will people will appeal to people of a similar age to us who still love indie music and want to be able to see some up-and-coming bands too,” said Katie.

“We’d love for Valley Sounds to become an annual event and we are already considering expanding it to a two-day festival next year if things go well.”

The festival line-up also includes Glass Caves, Drop the Floor, The Empire Police, Suburban Symphony, Violet Youth, Anhedonia, Palace Motion, Indigo Rose, Teri Birtwistle, 3D Tanx, Pill Fangs and One Man and His Beard.

“Hopefully Valley Sounds will prove really successful,” said Katie. “We’re not looking to make a massive profit, we’re just hoping to break even and have an event which is all about the music. We are very excited about the line-up and can’t wait for October to come along now so everyone can enjoy it.”
