A MOTHER has slammed the ‘far too lenient’ sentence given to the uninsured driver of a car which hit her 10-year-old son and ‘left him for dead’ in the middle of the street.

Aqib Mohammed, 24, was jailed for 20 weeks by Blackburn magistrates after admitting to causing injury to Keaton Adams and failing to stop.

Keaton was hit by the silver Saab estate driven by Mohammed, while riding his bike in Romney Walk, Blackburn, at 3.50pm on November 2.

Keaton was left with serious injuries which impact his daily life.

His mother Pat Adams said the sentence was too soft given the lasting damage caused to her son.

She said: “The accident has totally changed him. He is still in intense physiotherapy and is no longer able to do the things he loves, like playing football.

“He’s a different boy because of the accident, he still walks with a limp.”

The St Antony’s RC Primary School, Blackburn, pupil, who had to temporarily use a wheelchair, was on the pavement with one foot on the kerb and one on his bike when he was hit by the car.

The youngster, who suffered a badly broken leg as well as cuts and bruises, was then left in the road alone as the Mohammed failed to stop and help him.

However resident Tracy Hudson had seen the incident and called an ambulance.

Keaton, of Hillside Close, Blackburn, was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Wanting to show their support for the youngster, the Romney Voice residents group, raised £150 to replace Keaton’s damaged bike and buy a bouquet of flowers for Tracy as a thank you for the community spirit she showed.

Mohammed, of Burlington Street, Blackburn, handed himself into police later on November 2.

After also admitting driving without due care and attention and driving while uninsured, he was banned from getting behind the wheel for 12 months.

PC Laura Kendall said: “The young victim was left with a serious leg injury and nine months later, he has still not fully recovered both physically and mentally.

“I would like to commend the victim on his bravery and also his family and the witnesses who assisted.”
