DOZENS of people, including one well-known face, took part in an annual 10-mile walk to raise awareness of suicide.

Elderly and young people, parents and children all gathered at Witton Country Park in Blackburn to start the walk, which ended at the Mill Hill pub.

Tony Harrison organises the walks after his 21-year-old daughter, Vicky, took her own life in March 2010.

Mr Harrison said it was fantastic to see more than 40 people take part.

He said: “We get people coming back every year to this and it's great.

“There were a few new faces as well which was pleasing to see.

“It doesn’t matter if you walk the whole 10 miles or 10 feet, it’s about raising awareness of suicide among people, especially young people.”

Peter Gunn, who plays Brian Packham on ITV’s Coronation Street, also took part in the walk and pledged his support.

He said: “I met Tony in Asda in Blackburn and he explained what he was doing and I was really interested in taking part.

“I think it's important to raise awareness and support for people.

“Suicide affects everyone, not just men, not just women, it's everyone.

“It's important to show people that suicide is not the only option and there is help out there and support can be offered.”

Mr Harrison’s daughter, who had 10 GCSEs, three A-levels and was due to return to South Bank University in London in September of that year after quitting a degree in film and media, had been considering a career in teaching.

Ged Flynn, CEO, of PAPYRUS, a national charity which tackles suicide in young people, who attended the walk, said: “What Tony has done is to talk about suicide and talk with others about their experiences. Tony has also given a voice to those who are in silence.

“He is unmasking the face of suicide. We all have times in our lives that challenge us and causes anyone to think about things, but suicide does not have to be the answer.”
